The chamber air grew heavier with each pulse of the central rune, its red light casting long, dancing shadows across the stone walls. Merrin descended into the pit below, his rope groaning under the strain as it caught on something metallic far beneath them. The skeleton's hollow eye sockets seemed to track Jeane's movements, its jaw working soundlessly in a silent gnashing of teeth.

Jeane spoke up, her voice tight with barely contained anxiety. "I can feel it, can't you? The tower itself is breathing around us—inhaling ancient death magic through those carved channels and exhaling it into this chamber like a sick lung." She turned to Merrin, still descending carefully below them. "Those runes aren't resisting; they're awakening something that was meant to stay buried with the architect who designed them. Your presence down there is an invitation for whatever's waiting below to pick them off one by one."

Seraphine nodded slowly in agreement, her sharp eyes fixed on the pulsing rune. "The air here is thick, almost alive with ancient power, and it presses against my skin like a suffocating shroud." She took a measured step back from the pit's edge, her robes whispering against stone. "Merrin's question hangs between us, a tangible thing in this charged atmosphere." Her gaze swept over the runes again, tracing their intricate patterns with a scholar's eye. "The magic here is... wrong, ancient and predatory in a way I've never encountered before. We should proceed with extreme caution."

Halie clutched her holy symbol tighter, the metal digging into her palm as she whispered a prayer for protection. The skeleton's movements had become more agitated, its bony fingers scraping against the stone floor in an eerie rhythm that seemed to match the pulsing of the central rune.

Varrika shifted her grip on the heavy mace, her knuckles whitening. "So what now? We just stand here and wait for whatever's down there to come up?" Her voice was gruff with barely contained impatience.

Merrin's voice drifted up from below, strained but steady. "The rope caught on something solid down here—looks like a hidden platform or landing. I'm going to check it out, see if there are any triggers or traps before we all come down." The rope creaked as he moved carefully across the unseen surface beneath them.

Jeane's wings tightened against her back instinctively, a nervous gesture she couldn't suppress. "Be careful," she called down. "If those runes are active defenses, they might have... secondary measures to deal with intruders."

Seraphine moved closer to the edge, peering down into the darkness below. The faint glow of Merrin's torch flickered in the depths, casting eerie shadows that danced across the walls like macabre puppets. "Merrin," she said, her voice carrying an uncharacteristic note of concern, "if you feel any significant magical pressure or see unusual symbols activating around your feet, withdraw immediately. We don't know what these defenses are capable of."

The central rune pulsed again, its light intensifying for a moment before subsiding back to its previous rhythm. A low rumble echoed through the chamber, like stone groaning under immense pressure, and a fresh wave of acrid gas rose from the pit's depths. The skeleton began to move, its jerky motions carrying it closer to the edge where Merrin had descended.

Jeane hissed a warning, her hand already moving in a subtle gesture that gathered arcane energy around her fingertips. "It's moving," she breathed, her eyes fixed on the approaching undead creature. "Seraphine, can you identify what's powering it? Is there a control rune or binding sigil anywhere visible?"

Seraphine's gaze swept across the chamber walls and floor, her mind racing to catalog the intricate patterns carved into the stone. "I... I'm not seeing anything obvious," she admitted reluctantly. "But that doesn't mean it isn't there—hidden layers of magic are common in ancient defensive constructs like this."

The skeleton reached the edge of the pit, its bony fingers curling around the lip as it began to haul itself up with jerky, unnatural movements. Merrin's voice called up from below, tight with concern. "Everyone above, watch out! I think it's following me!"

Jeane took a step back, her wings half-spreading in a defensive posture. "Stay calm," she said more to herself than anyone else, the arcane energy around her fingers intensifying into a swirling ball of crimson light. "We can handle one skeleton—focus on containing it before it reaches the others."

Seraphine nodded sharply, already beginning to chant under her breath as she drew upon her magical reserves. The air around her hands shimmered with arcane energy, forming a complex pattern that would create a protective barrier if needed.

Halie moved back against the far wall, her holy symbol clutched before her like a shield. "Goddess protect us," she whispered, her eyes wide with fear and determination.

Varrika raised her mace, her stance broadening as she prepared to meet the undead threat head-on. "Let it come," she growled, a fierce grin spreading across her face despite the situation's gravity.

The skeleton hauled itself fully onto the chamber floor with a series of wet clicks and scrapes that grated on everyone's nerves. It turned towards them, its hollow eye sockets seeming to fix on Merrin's position below. Then, to everyone's surprise, it began to move... not towards them, but towards the central rune.

Jeane lowered her hand, the ball of light dissipating as she watched the unexpected development. "What in the abyss is it doing?"

Seraphine stopped her incantation mid-chant, her head tilted in confusion. "This... doesn't make sense. Undead creatures are usually driven by a need to spread their corruption or fulfill a specific purpose—following us, attacking us, or guarding something valuable. But this one seems to be... returning to its master?"

The skeleton reached the central rune and came to an abrupt halt. Its bony fingers traced over the carved symbols, almost reverently, before it began to sink into the stone itself with a series of wet clicks and grinding noises. Within moments, it had completely vanished inside the rune, leaving the stone smooth and unmarked once more.

The central rune pulsed once, its light dimming slightly for a moment before returning to its previous intensity. The air in the chamber seemed to shudder, as if releasing a held breath, and the oppressive heat lessened marginally.

Merrin's voice drifted up from below, incredulous. "Did it just... dissolve into the rune? What in all the hells is going on up there?"

Jeane let out a slow breath, her wings relaxing slightly as she processed what they'd just witnessed. "I think we just saw the true purpose of those defenses," she said softly. "Not to keep us out, but to... replenish the rune's power? Or maybe it's some kind of ancient recycling system for failed guardians."

Seraphine moved closer to the edge again, peering down into the darkness below. "Merrin, I think it's safe for you to come back up now," she called down. "Whatever just happened... it doesn't seem immediately hostile to us, at least not in the way we expected."

Halie emerged from her defensive position against the wall, her holy symbol still clutched tightly. "So what does this mean? If those skeletons are part of the tower's maintenance system instead of actual guardians..."

Jeane finished her thought with a grim expression. "It means there might be a whole lot more of them... and they're probably not going to stay in the basement forever."

Varrika let out a low whistle, shaking her head in disbelief. "Great. Just great. So we've got an undead janitorial service to deal with now. At least they seem to be on a schedule?"

The central rune pulsed again, its light casting long shadows across their faces. Merrin's voice came up from below once more, strained but determined. "I'm coming back up. The platform down here is stable enough, and I didn't trigger any obvious traps. But there's something... moving in the darkness below. Something bigger than a skeleton."

Jeane's wings tensed again, her crimson eyes fixed on the rope as Merrin began to ascend. "Everyone stay alert," she warned. "If whatever's down there is related to those skeletons... we might be about to meet the tower's real security."
