Phase: escalating

The tower's secret chamber yawned open before them, revealing not dusty emptiness but a space alive with wrongness. The air inside tasted of decay and something else—old magic, dark and hungry. The ground beneath their feet was unnervingly soft, as if the very stone had gone rotten.
Jeane's fingers traced the central rune on the gate one last time before they passed through. The symbol pulsed with a sickly red light under her touch, its surface warm and disturbingly alive. She felt it breathe, drawing in energy from somewhere unseen. "Stop," she commanded sharply as they crossed the threshold. Everyone froze mid-step, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere.
Merrin's foot found nothing but air where solid floor should have been. She dropped with a startled yelp into the waiting darkness below, her descent broken only by the screech of protesting wood and the jolt as her crowbar wedged between collapsing boards. The others rushed to the edge, peering down into the sudden pit that had opened beneath them.
Seraphine crouched at the lip of the new chasm, her sharp elven eyes straining in the gloom. "Merrin! Can you hear me?" Her voice cut through the thick air, sharp and urgent. She turned to the others, her expression grave. The musty stink here spoke of secrets long buried, and something ancient had stirred with their arrival.
Halie moved closer, lighting her torch from Seraphine's. The flickering light revealed walls slick with some unknown residue and floors that seemed to shift subtly underfoot. Varrika's presence was reassuring—muscle and mace—but even she looked uneasy in this place where the very air felt wrong. "Can you sense any magical currents in the walls?" Halie asked Jeane, her voice measured despite the apprehension tightening her chest. "Any traps that might react to us going down there?"
Varrika planted her feet wide, ready for whatever might come next. The ground felt solid under her boots, but who knew what other horrors lurked here? She leaned over carefully, her voice low. "Merrin, can you hear me? Reach up and grab onto something sturdy. We'll get you out." She scanned the darkness below, looking for any sign of movement or equipment glint.
