As the party cautiously proceeds into the secret chamber, the air thickens with the scent of rot and decay. The ground beneath their feet creaks ominously, and the flickering torches cast eerie shadows on the walls. In the center of the room, a large, ornate mirror hangs from the ceiling, its surface reflecting an image that is not their own. The reflection shows a figure - Elric, the Hermit - standing in the midst of a withered garden, his eyes fixed intently on the Time-Splitting Sword. Suddenly, the ground gives way beneath Merrin's foot, and she stumbles into a hidden pit, the wooden floor creaking beneath her as she falls. The chamber erupts in a faint, unsettling chuckle, and the mirror's surface begins to ripple, as if the reflection is about to vanish.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I trace the central rune one more time, feeling its power pulse beneath my fingers—as if it breathes—and think: This isn't natural. The ground shifting beneath us is not natural. That rotten smell—it's more than decay, it's corruption. I call out, "Stop right there." My voice echoes off the stone walls of the secret chamber deep within the crumbling tower. Everyone freezes. The air grows thick with something ancient and wrong. Malevolent energy prickles across my skin despite my wards. Ancient death magic, potent and fresh despite centuries of burial—someone or something has been keeping it alive down here. The map was clearly wrong, or this place is more layered than we anticipated. I say to no one in particular, "We're not alone." My heart beats faster. The central rune pulsed brighter with our entry—as if sensing living trespassers—and the thickening darkness suggests something woke up when Merrin stumbled into that pit. The faint chuckle heard earlier was real, and the mirror's surface rippling... that wasn't a trick of the light. I mutter under my breath about needing to proceed carefully. I look at each party member in turn: Halie drawing symbols that might or might not help against whatever lurks here; Merrin dusty from her fall but unbroken, ready with that mace; Seraphine scanning for traps like a nervous cat; Varrika steady with her weapon raised. I ask slowly, "Does anyone know how to retrieve something without touching it? Or maybe banish whatever's laughing at us from mirrors?"

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I let out a startled yelp as my foot plunges through the rotten floorboard, pitching me forward into darkness. My hands scrabble for purchase, but find only more crumbling wood. I hear Varrika's alarmed shout and the others' gasps as they rush to the edge of the pit. Heart pounding, I manage to wedge my crowbar between two boards, slowing my descent. "Light!" I call up, my voice echoing in the shaft. "I'm alright so far, but I could use a hand!"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I crouch down at the edge of the sudden pit, my keen elven eyes straining in the dim light to make out Merrin's form below. The air is thick with dust and an ancient, musty smell that speaks of long-forgotten secrets buried deep beneath us.
"Merrin! Can you hear me?" My voice cuts through the eerie silence, sharp and urgent. I turn my head, scanning the faces of the others for some sign of what to do next.
Jeane's warning about the malevolent energy still echoes in my mind. This place feels alive with a dark power, watching us, waiting. I feel a chill trace a path down my spine as I remember Elric's words about the tower being a prison wearing a crown.
My gaze falls on the mirror reflecting the withered garden, its surface rippling like a pool of ink. Something about it feels wrong, out of place in this decaying shell of a stronghold. A faint chuckle seems to drift up from the pit, or perhaps it's just the creaking of the old stone settling under our weight.
I take a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic pounding of my heart. We came here for a purpose, but now that we've found what feels like a key, I'm questioning every step we took to get here.
"Everyone, be alert," I say, my voice steady despite the fear coiling in my gut. "There's something more than just a pit down there. Merrin, can you see anything? Any sign of the sword?"

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I move closer to Merrin's voice, lighting my torch from Seraphine's. The air down here is thick with decay and something else—ancient malevolence made fresh. Varrika's right to be alert, but that mace won't help against whatever woke up when Merrin fell. We need a plan before we descend further into this pit. I turn to Jeane. "Can you sense any magical currents in the walls? Any traps that might react to us going down there?" My voice is measured, not panicked—panic serves no purpose here. Seraphine's already looking strained enough for all of us. Merrin needs help, yes, but rushing blindly into a pit that creaks with dark energy seems like a death sentence. I crouch at the edge myself now, peering down into the darkness below. "Merrin," I call softly, "are you hurt? Can you see anything down there?"

I know I'm playing the cautious role here—the voice of reason trying to temper Varrika's instinct for violence and Jeane's fascination with forbidden magic—but someone has to think about what happens next. This tower is alive in a wrong way, and we're trespassers in its heart. My hand tightens around my holy symbol—silver, cold, grounding. It's not much against demons or curses, but it's all I have to hold onto the light in this place of shadows.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I plant my feet firmly, ready for anything. The ground feels solid under my boots, but who knows what other traps might lurk here. I keep my voice low, trying not to startle Merrin further. "Merrin, can you hear me? Reach up and grab onto something sturdy. We'll get you out." I peer over the edge, scanning the darkness for any glint of her equipment or flicker of movement. I turn to the others, my voice tight with urgency. "Halie, Seraphine - we need a plan. Merrin's in trouble and there's no telling what other dangers might be down there." I glance around at the shadows gathering in the corners of the chamber. "Keep your eyes open and your weapons ready. This tower's full of nasty surprises."

My mind races as I try to think through our next move. Getting Merrin out safely is priority one. But with this whole place crawling with dark magic and who knows what else... We're in for a rough time of it.
