The secret chamber yawned open before them, revealing not dusty emptiness but a space alive with wrongness. The air inside tasted of decay and something else—old magic, dark and hungry. The ground beneath their feet was unnervingly soft, as if the very stone had gone rotten.
Jeane's fingers traced the central rune on the gate one last time before they passed through. The symbol pulsed with a sickly red light under her touch, its surface warm and disturbingly alive. She felt it breathe, drawing in energy from somewhere unseen. "Stop," she commanded sharply as they crossed the threshold. Everyone froze mid-step, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere.
Merrin's foot found nothing but air where solid floor should have been. She dropped with a startled yelp into the waiting darkness below, her descent broken only by the screech of protesting wood and the jolt as her crowbar wedged between collapsing boards. The others rushed to the edge, peering down into the sudden pit that had opened beneath them.
