Round 15

Phase: escalating

The tower's ancient stone corridor exhaled decay mixed with something far worse—an old magic that curdled the air inside. The ground shuddered beneath their feet, a low rumble that was less geological than malevolent intent made manifest. A faint glow emanated from deeper within the structure, pulsing like a heartbeat, bathing the entryway in an eerie light that cast long shadows across weathered stone.
Jeane stepped forward first, her crimson eyes narrowed as they traced the complex patterns etched into the now-open gate. Her fingers hovered just above the ancient carvings, not touching directly, as she probed the magical defenses with her sorcerer's senses. The central rune pulsed brighter as she focused on it, likely an active component of whatever held the door sealed for centuries.
"This isn't mere stonework," she murmured, more to herself than the others. "It wants to keep us out." The Time-Splitting Sword itself felt heavy in its sheath at her side, its own dark energy calling to her despite—or perhaps because of—the ancient magic that saturated the tower's interior.
Merrin moved up beside her, crossbow held ready, every halfling sense on high alert. "Alright, listen up you lot," she called out in a hushed tone, "Something's not right about this place. I've got a bad feeling in my gut, and it isn't just because we're trespassing." Her dark eyes scanned the shadows ahead, searching for movement or threat.
Seraphine hung back slightly, wizard's staff held at the ready, her sharp elven gaze already analyzing the magical signatures that leaked through the open gateway. The air inside felt wrong—wrong in a way that made her skin crawl and her fingers itch to cast protective wards. But she knew better than to waste magical energy on unnecessary defenses—not yet, anyway.
The central rune pulsed again, brighter this time, as if responding to their presence. A low creaking sound emanated from deeper within the structure—stone groaning under immense pressure or... something else entirely. The faint glow from the depths seemed to intensify slightly, casting longer shadows that writhed unnaturally across the corridor walls.
Jeane's wings shifted restlessly at her back, a subconscious gesture of unease. "The ward is old—ancient—but it's still active," she said softly, voice carrying an unnatural resonance in the stone walls. "There's an unnatural stillness here, like time is holding its breath." She turned to face Merrin and Seraphine standing ready with their weapons and spells. "Whatever's waiting for us inside... it knows we're here now."
The air grew thicker, heavier, pressing against them from all sides. Something ancient and hungry stirred in the depths of the crumbling tower, something that had waited centuries for fresh prey to cross its threshold. The party stood poised at the edge of darkness, each woman's instincts screaming warnings even as their purpose drove them forward into the unknown dangers within.
