Shadow of the Ancients / Run 012 / Main Story
Round 15 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane's illumination spell casts a dim, blue-green glow across the corridor, the party is met with an eerie sight. The ground beneath their feet seems to be shifting, as if the very foundations of the tower are protesting their presence. A loud creaking echoes through the air, and the ancient stones appear to be slowly closing in, as if trying to snuff out the faint light. The air grows thick with a noxious odor, like decay and rot mingling with something far more sinister. The silver holy symbol at Seraphine's throat begins to vibrate with an otherworldly energy, casting an unsettling glow across her face. Suddenly, a low, ominous chuckle seems to emanate from the depths of the tower, sending shivers down the spines of even the most hardened adventurers. The ground gives a final, violent lurch, and the corridor is plunged into darkness, the only sound the distant, mocking laughter echoing through the void. The party must decide how to proceed in this treacherous environment.
I trace the central rune one more time, feeling its power pulse beneath my fingers—as if it breathes—and the air around us shifts. The darkness in this corridor feels alive, watchful. My wings tighten reflexively. This place is hungry. I turn to face Varrika and Merrin standing ready with their weapons. "The ward is old—ancient—but it's still active," I say softly, voice carrying unnatural resonance in the stone walls. "There's an unnatural stillness here, like time is holding its breath." I gesture for them to move carefully. "Merrin, keep that mace handy. You never know what might lurk in the shadows of a place like this." The illumination spell casts barely enough light to see by—the darkness seems to absorb it—and the ground shifts beneath our feet with an ominous creak. My skin prickles with warning. We should not linger here.
Merrin's eyes dart around the darkened corridor, her halfling senses on high alert as an ominous creak echoes through the ancient stones. The air grows thick with a noxious odor, like decay and something far more sinister mingling together. She grips her crossbow tightly, finger hovering over the trigger. "Alright, listen up you lot," Merrin calls out in a hushed tone, "Something's not right about this place. I've got a bad feeling in my gut, and I don't think it's just because we're trespassing in a crumbling tower."
She takes a tentative step forward, her eyes straining to pierce the shadows. "Varrika, Halie - keep your weapons ready. We don't want any surprises jumping out at us from the darkness."
Merrin's gaze falls on the shifting runes etched into the walls, their pulsing red light casting eerie shadows across the corridor. "And Jeane," she adds, "be careful with those runes. We don't know what might be lurking behind them."
As if in response to her words, a chilling chuckle echoes through the air, sending shivers down Merrin's spine. She tenses, her grip on the crossbow tightening as the darkness presses in around them. "Stay sharp, everyone," Merrin whispers, her eyes darting from shadow to shadow. "We've got company, and I don't think they're friendly."
I feel a sharp chill trace its way down my spine as the air in the corridor seems to thicken, becoming almost tangible with an ancient, malevolent presence. The dim illumination spell cast by Jeane does little to penetrate the oppressive darkness that presses against us from all sides. My eyes dart towards the ominous chuckle that echoes through the shadows, a sound that seems to come from everywhere and nowhere at once.
My fingers tighten around the heavy mace I'm holding, its comforting weight a small reassurance in this treacherous place. The silver holy symbol at my throat suddenly feels colder against my skin, a stark contrast to the warmth it usually radiates when I call upon its protection.
"The chuckle... it sounds like a child's laughter, but there's no innocence in it," I whisper, my voice so low it is almost lost in the air. My gaze meets Varrika's across the narrow space between us, and I see the same unease reflected back at me in her eyes.
I turn my attention to the runes etched into the stone walls of the corridor. They pulse with a strange, unnatural light, their patterns shifting and rearranging as if they hold secrets we dare not uncover. A shiver runs through me as I remember Halie's warning about the 'wrong magic' we might encounter here.
"I believe Merrin was right," I say, my voice still low but more certain now. "Something is watching us, and it doesn't seem to want us here."
