The ancient stones of the crumbling tower gate groaned under their own weight, as if the very structure was alive and protesting the intrusion of these mortal visitors. The massive iron-bound portal stood sealed tight, its surface covered in intricate carvings that pulsed with an ominous dark energy. At the center, a single large symbol—a stylized eye surrounded by twelve smaller stars—flashed rhythmically, each pulse sending a visible ripple through the surrounding stonework.

Jeane, her crimson eyes narrowed with suspicion, fixed her gaze on Elric as she spoke in a low voice meant only for her companions. "This magic feels wrong," she hissed. "It responds to our presence like something alive." Her wings shifted restlessly behind her, the leathery membranes rustling softly. She continued, "We need to approach this systematically. First, we map what we can sense from here without touching anything."

Seraphine, her elegant elven features etched with concern, stepped forward to examine the gate more closely. She extended one gloved hand toward the surface but stopped just short of contact. "The runes themselves are fascinating," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "This level of arcane binding is... unprecedented." Her sharp gaze followed the patterns as they pulsed and shifted in response to her proximity.

Halie, the weary human cleric, moved closer to Merrin, her hand resting protectively on the halfling's shoulder. The magic here is old—older than anything we've faced before," she warned, her blue-grey eyes scanning the runes with professional suspicion. "We can't just brute-force this gate without knowing what's behind those symbols." She turned to Elric, her expression stern. "And you—what exactly did you mean by 'price for knowledge'? Speak plainly."

Jeane, the tall winged succubus sorcerer, crouched down to examine the gate more closely. Her crimson eyes narrowed as she traced the patterns with the tip of her dagger, watching for any reaction. The dark magic pulses beneath my fingers like a heartbeat trying to escape its chest," she muttered, not turning away from the stonework. "Elric speaks in riddles and half-truths—this isn't knowledge we're buying; it's permission."

Merrin, the wiry halfling rogue, found herself torn between curiosity and caution as she eyed the gate's dark runes. Elric's warnings echoed in her mind—there was a price for knowledge, and touching those symbols could trigger something they weren't prepared for. But they'd come this far, and the tower held secrets they desperately needed.

Varrika, the scarred female dwarf warrior, kept her heavy mace ready as she observed the proceedings with a veteran's wariness. "Merrin," she rumbled, her voice low and gravelly, "don't you go touching those runes without knowing what they do first." The tower feels different somehow—darker, more alive than any haunted ruin we've faced before.

The skeletons, undead remnants of the tower's original defenders, took another step closer, their bony feet clicking menacingly on the stone floor. The air seemed to thicken with anticipation, and the ancient magic within the stones pulsed faster in response to their proximity.

Elric's gaze flicked between the adventurers, his expression unreadable. "You wish to know the price?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "Very well. But be warned—the knowledge you seek comes with consequences, and the tower itself may demand payment in ways you cannot yet comprehend." The black star symbol on the gate flared even brighter, casting long, dancing shadows across the group.

Seraphine, her patience fraying, stepped closer to Elric. "Enough riddles," she snapped, her voice sharp with barely contained irritation. "What exactly are we risking here? And how do we proceed without triggering whatever defenses you've so helpfully warned us about?" Her fingers still hovered above the runes, the dark magic pulsing against her skin.

Halie, sensing the growing tension, moved to stand between Elric and the gate. "We need specifics," she said, her voice firm despite the apprehension evident in her eyes. "If there's a price for knowledge, we need to understand what it is before we accept any deals." She glanced at Merrin, then back to Elric. "And perhaps you could explain why those skeletons seem so... interested in our presence?"
