Elric's demeanor becomes even more guarded as he eyes the party warily. "Very well, I shall answer your questions one at a time. But know that each truth comes at a cost, and you must be prepared to pay it."

The pulsating black star symbol on the gate flares brighter, casting an eerie glow over the group. The air seems to thicken with anticipation, and the skeletons take another step closer, their bony feet clicking menacingly on the stone floor. Elric's gaze flicks to Halie, who senses a kind of magic before you attempt entry. "The magic within this gate is ancient and powerful," he says, his voice low and measured. "To unlock it, you must first understand the price of knowledge."

He pauses, his eyes glinting with a hint of challenge. "I shall answer your questions, but be warned: each truth comes at a cost, and you must be prepared to pay it."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Merrin prepare to force entry with the crowbar, a reckless move that could trigger an unknown magic we’re unprepared for. My eyes dart between the pulsing runes on the gate and Merrin’s determined expression, a sharp contrast of carelessness and power.
The air crackles with an ancient energy, the kind that makes the hairs on my arms stand on end. It feels like the very stones are watching us, waiting for a misstep.
I turn to Elric, his face bathed in the eerie glow of the rune-covered gate. He looks more like a ghost than a man now, his eyes reflecting the same pulsating light as the door itself.
"Elric," I say, my voice firm despite the tremor I feel inside. "What exactly did you mean by 'price for knowledge'? This doesn't look like a simple map."
My hand instinctively goes to the silver holy symbol at my hip, a familiar weight against my palm. It hums with a low, steady vibration, a warning or a promise, I can't yet tell which.
The skeletons shift behind Elric, their hollow eye sockets seeming to focus on me. A cold sweat trickles down my spine.
I take a step closer to the gate, my heart pounding against my ribs. The runes are moving faster now, their dark star shape twisting in on itself like a spinning coin. They seem to beckon me, promising secrets and power, but also a grave danger.
My mind races, trying to recall every bit of lore I know about ancient magic and sealed doors. There must be a way to decipher this puzzle without tearing it apart. But time is running out, and the tower's awareness is growing more potent with each passing second.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I step closer to Merrin, hand on her shoulder. "Wait," I say, my voice low but firm. The magic here is old—older than anything we've faced before. We can't just brute-force this gate without knowing what's behind those runes." I turn to Elric, suspicion clear in my eyes. "What exactly did you mean by 'price for knowledge'? And don't give me any more riddles—I want a straight answer." My gaze flicks back to the gate. The black star is pulsing faster now, almost hungry. We need to know what we're dealing with before Merrin starts pounding on it.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane steps forward to examine the runes more closely, her wings folding against her back as she crouches down for a better view. The dark magic pulses beneath her fingers like a heartbeat trying to escape its chest—the rhythm quickening when she presses harder. "Elric speaks in riddles and half-truths," she mutters, not turning away from the gate. "This isn't knowledge we're buying—it's permission." She traces one of the star-shapes with her dagger, watching for reaction. The runes glow briefly before fading again. "Merrin, stand down. Force won't open this door; magic will." Her eyes narrow as she considers the options. "Halie, prepare a blessing against corruption just in case something leaks through. Seraphine, ready your dispel spells. We're going to have to sequence these runes correctly or we'll set off whatever trap guards this entrance." Jeane straightens up and faces Elric directly, her voice cold. "Tell me exactly what happens if we fail the test, old man. And make it plain this time—no more vague warnings."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I eye the gate's dark runes warily. Elric's warnings echo in my mind—there's a price for knowledge, and touching those symbols could trigger something we're not prepared for. But we've come this far, and the tower holds secrets we need. I glance at Halie, her face pale and tense as she senses the ancient magic pulsing from the stones. Varrika shifts her grip on the mace, muscles coiled like a spring ready to uncoil. Jeane traces the runes with her dagger, her brow furrowed in concentration. The air feels thick with tension and the promise of danger. Every instinct screams at me to be cautious, but we can't turn back now. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. "Alright," I say, my voice steady despite the knot of fear in my stomach. "Let's see what's behind door number one."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I keep my heavy mace ready as I eye the pulsing runes warily. Elric's talk of a 'price for knowledge' sets me on edge - nothing good ever comes from deals like that. Merrin, don't you go touching those runes without knowing what they do first. We've faced down plenty of magical traps and defenses in our time, but this tower feels different somehow. Darker. More... alive. Halie, I trust your judgment on magic. What do you make of these runes? And Seraphine, can you shed any light on what we might be up against here? As for me, I'll keep a watch on our flanks and the shadows beyond this gate. If there's undead lurking about, I aim to face them head-on. No sneaking past whatever wards or seals are in place. This is no time to be reckless, but neither can we turn back now. We came here for that accursed sword, and by the gods, we'll see this through. Just... let's be smart about it. No heroics, Merrin - at least not until we know what we're walking into. I step forward, my mace at the ready, and peer closer at those runes. The very air feels thick with ancient power here. Whatever lies beyond that gate, I have a feeling it's going to test us in ways we haven't faced before. But that's why we train, isn't it? To face the unknown, and emerge stronger. So lead on, Merrin. Let's see what fate has in store for us beyond those pulsing runes.
