Phase: escalating

The ancient stones of the crumbling tower gate groaned under the weight of centuries, their surface slick with moss and moisture. The massive iron-bound portal stood sealed tight, its surface covered in intricate carvings that pulsed with an ominous dark energy. At the center, a single large symbol—a stylized eye surrounded by twelve smaller stars—flashed rhythmically, each pulse sending a visible ripple through the surrounding stonework.
Jeane, her crimson eyes narrowed with suspicion, fixed her gaze on Elric as she spoke in a low voice meant only for her companions. "This magic feels wrong," she hissed. "It responds to our presence like something alive." Her wings shifted restlessly behind her, the leathery membranes rustling softly. She continued, "We need to approach this systematically. First, we map what we can sense from here without touching anything."
Seraphine, her elegant elven features etched with concern, stepped forward to examine the gate more closely. She extended one gloved hand toward the surface but stopped just short of contact. "The runes themselves are fascinating," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "They seem to form a containment circle around the central symbol." Her keen eyes traced the patterns carefully. "But touching them could trigger any number of defensive spells or traps."
Varrika moved closer as well, her scarred hands hovering near the hilt of her mace but not yet drawn. She studied the gate's construction with a practiced eye, noting the way the stones fit together and the obvious signs of age and decay. "These outer stones here," she said, gesturing to the unstable sections on either side of the gate, "they're loose as hell. One wrong move and we could have a cave-in." She glanced back at Elric, her expression stern. "You mentioned a price for this map. What exactly did you mean by that?"
The air around them seemed to thicken with each passing moment, heavy with the weight of ancient magic and the palpable sense of something waiting just beyond the gate's surface. The central star symbol pulsed faster in response to their proximity and scrutiny, its light growing more intense.
