The air around the crumbling tower crackled with dark energy as Merrin prepared to force entry with her crowbar, the pulsing black stars on the gate responding hungrily to their presence. Jeane demanded answers from Elric about the runes and Halie's reaction, suspicion clear in her voice. Seraphine watched warily, fear pounding in her chest as the magic grew stronger.

Merrin hesitated, eyeing the unstable stones around the gate that Varrika had pointed out. "These runes are dangerous," she said. "We need to understand them before touching them."

Jeane's crimson eyes narrowed with mistrust. "I don't trust this map or its maker," she hissed at Elric. "What did you do to Halie?"

Seraphine took a cautious step back, her heart pounding. "Merrin, wait! We don't know what the gate's full defenses are yet."

Varrika moved forward, her scarred hands hovering near her mace. "The stones here are loose—one wrong move and we'll have a collapse on our hands."

Elric's eyes glinted with amusement. "The runes are ancient wards meant to keep out intruders," he explained calmly. "The price for knowledge was a taste of their power—nothing more."

Halie's blue-grey eyes widened in alarm. "A taste? You mean...?"

Merrin shook her head emphatically. "No way I'm letting anyone bleed for this mad hermit's curiosity!"

Jeane's hand moved to the hilt of her sword, ready to draw. "Explain yourself, hermit," she growled. "What exactly did this 'taste' do?"

Seraphine backed away further, her keen eyes scanning the gate for any sign of additional traps or defenses. "Agreed. Let's circle the tower, look for other entrances or weaknesses in its defenses."

Varrika moved to the gate's edge, examining the stonework carefully. "The gate itself might be a decoy—the real entry could be elsewhere."

Merrin sighed in frustration. "Fine, but we're not leaving Halie exposed to this magic any longer."

Jeane sheathed her sword with visible reluctance. "Elric, your 'knowledge' comes at too high a price. We'll find our own way forward."

Seraphine nodded grimly. "Let's move out and reassess the situation from a safe distance."

Halie moved to follow Seraphine, eager to put distance between herself and the dangerous magic clinging to her skin. "I'm with you—I don't want another taste of that power."

Varrika's voice rose in alarm. "The stones are shifting—we need to get clear before they come down!"

[The party quickly moved away from the gate, heeding Varrika's warning about the unstable structure. The air around them crackled less intensely as they put distance between themselves and the tower's main entrance.]
