Seraphine struggled to her feet, her legs shaky from the teleportation stress and the sheer terror of being trapped in this ancient, magic-saturated cavern. The heavy metal bar she'd been clutching clanged to the stone floor as her hands moved instinctively to the protective sigils etched into her gloves—a ward against malevolent spirits, but she doubted it would be enough against whatever had just grabbed Halie and pulled her down into the darkness.
"Merrin!" she hissed, scanning the gloom above for any sign of her friend. "Are you okay? What's happening up there?" The echoing chanting seemed to have stopped, replaced by an ominous silence that felt even more threatening than the sound had been. She took a step closer to Merrin, seeking what little comfort the other woman's presence could provide in this nightmare scenario.
The air was thick with power, heavy and alive in a way that made Seraphine's skin crawl. Every breath seemed to fill her lungs with magic so ancient it felt sentient, and she could feel it pressing against her skin, trying to seep into her pores. She knew they were trapped down here, separated from Jeane and the others by the collapse of the bridge—and worse, surrounded by who-knew-what in these depths.
"Jeane?" she called out softly, her voice barely carrying over the distant groaning of stone that seemed to be coming from everywhere and nowhere at once. "Can you hear me? Are you both okay up there?" The elf woman's heart raced as she waited for a response, the heavy metal bar clutched tightly in her hands once more. She knew they were in deep trouble—trapped between ancient magic, collapsing tunnels, and whatever had just pulled Halie down into the darkness below.
Jeane hovered in place, her crimson eyes fixed on the spot where Halie had vanished. The stone there still smoked faintly from the heat of the demon's touch, and a faint, oily residue marked where something had passed through the solid rock as if it were water. She felt a cold fury building inside her at Halie's sheer incompetence—how could someone with such power be so utterly unprepared for the dangers of this place?
Stupid girl, she thought bitterly. Always thinking with her libido instead of her brain. But even as the anger simmered, Jeane knew they had bigger problems. Whatever had taken Halie wasn't just some random monster—the way it had passed through solid stone suggested something far more dangerous and likely ancient.
"Merrin," she said finally, her voice tight with controlled rage. "We need to find a way down there. And we need to be prepared for whatever the hell that was." The succubus woman's wings beat slowly, keeping her hovering position steady as she scanned the cavern floor below. She could see Merrin and Seraphine huddled together at the bottom of the chasm, and she knew they were just as trapped as Halie had been.
This place is worse than I thought, Jeane mused grimly. Much worse. She reached out with her magical senses, trying to get a read on what lay beneath them in the darkness. The ambient magic here was thick enough to choke on—ancient power that felt sentient and hostile—and she could feel currents of it swirling around something massive below.
"Fuck," she muttered under her breath. "There's something big down there. And I don't think it wants us anywhere near its lair."
