As Seraphine stands frozen, the gaunt figure takes a step closer, its eyes burning with an inner fire. "You should not have come here," it hisses, its voice like dry leaves rustling in the wind. The air around it seems to ripple with dark energy, and Seraphine can feel the weight of ancient power bearing down upon her. The creature's gaze falls upon Merrin, who stands motionless, her eyes fixed on the figure. The Ancient Prison Guardian's expression is one of deep sadness, mixed with a hint of curiosity. "You seek to free your companion," it says, its voice barely above a whisper. "But do you know what binds her?"

The creature's words are accompanied by a faint hum, and the air around them begins to distort, as if reality itself is being warped by the Ancient Prison Guardian's presence.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane hovers in place, her crimson eyes fixed on the gaunt figure materializing from the shadows—the ancient Prison Guardian. This is it, then, she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. The thing that trapped Halie... and now Merrin and Varrika with them. The creature's words echo through the cavern—You should not have come here—and Jeane feels a cold certainty settle over her. They've trespassed somewhere ancient and dangerous, disturbed something that shouldn't be awakened. We didn't mean to offend, she says carefully, keeping her tone respectful despite the wariness in her gut.

The Guardian's gaze falls upon Merrin—You seek to free your companion—and Jeane feels a surge of protective instinct. She moves slightly closer to Seraphine and Merrin without thinking. Yes. Our companion... she was trying to help. She didn't understand what she'd summoned. The creature's question hangs in the air—But do you know what binds her?—and Jeane realizes with a sickening lurch that they don't actually have that answer. I... we haven't seen it yet, she admits slowly. Whatever trapped them down here. We just heard their voices and came to help. The air around them distorts, reality bending in ways that make Jeane's wings twitch instinctively. Enough games, spirit, Jeane snaps, her patience fraying. Show yourself properly or let us pass—we have no time for riddles when our friends are trapped. She raises her mace slightly, not as a threat but as a warning: don't make this harder than it needs to be.

The Guardian's expression shifts—sadness mixed with something like... recognition? Jeane blinks, wondering if the cold is making her see things. What did you mean by 'ancient binding'? she asks more softly now, genuinely curious despite the danger. Is that what trapped them? As she floats there, waiting for an answer, Jeane's mind races. They need information—they can't save their friends without knowing what they're facing. But pushing too hard against a being this old and powerful... that could backfire spectacularly. diplomacy might be the smarter play here, even if it feels wrong to be respectful to something that's holding her companions prisoner.

The air grows colder still as she hovers there in the distorted space, and Jeane finds herself wishing—for just a moment—that Halie were here with them. Not for her summoning power—no—but for her diplomatic skill, her ability to talk anyone into almost anything.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's gaze snaps wide as the Ancient Prison Guardian materializes before them, its gaunt form seeming to suck the very light from the air around it. The halfling rogue's hand tightens on her crossbow, but she doesn't raise it—some instinct telling her that violence against this being would be utterly futile.

She listens intently as the Guardian speaks, its voice like dry leaves in the wind. We didn't mean to intrude, Merrin says quickly, her words tumbling out in a rush. Our friend... she summoned something. She thought it could help us explore this place safely. But now she's trapped, and so are two of our other companions. We just want to save them. Her voice cracks slightly on the last word, and she swallows hard, trying to steady herself.

As the Guardian's gaze falls upon her, Merrin feels a strange mix of emotions—fear, certainly, but also an odd sense of recognition, as if the ancient being sees something in her that even she doesn't fully understand. What do you mean by 'ancient binding'? she asks, her voice barely above a whisper. Is that what's keeping them trapped? Merrin's mind races as she tries to process this new information. An ancient binding... it sounds like something out of myth and legend, not the sort of thing they should be facing here in this crumbling tower. We don't have any magic like that, she says, her tone apologetic. We're just trying to survive. Trying to find our way through this place. She glances at Jeane and Seraphine, wondering what they're thinking. This situation has gone far beyond anything she could have imagined when they first entered the tower. Please, Merrin says finally, looking back at the Guardian with a desperation she can't quite hide. We don't want any trouble. We just want to save our friends and leave this place. Whatever we've disturbed here... whatever ancient magic you're bound to protect... we'll do whatever it takes to make things right. Just tell us how. As she speaks, Merrin feels a strange sensation wash over her—a tingling in her fingertips, like the faintest whisper of some long-dormant power. What's happening? she breathes, her eyes wide with confusion and a touch of fear.

She looks down at her hands, seeing the faint glow of energy pulsing just beneath her skin. It's unlike anything she's ever felt before, and yet... there's something familiar about it, too. Like a memory from a dream she can't quite recall.

Merrin takes a deep breath, trying to steady herself as she faces the Ancient Prison Guardian. She knows they're in way over their heads here—but they don't have a choice. They have to save Halie and Varrika, no matter what it takes.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the ancient power radiating from the gaunt figure before us, and it chills me to my core. The air itself seems to thicken with each passing moment, heavy with an aura of immense, untouchable power. My hands instinctively move to the intricate sigils etched into the leather of my gloves—a ward against malevolent spirits, but I wonder if it will be enough against something this old and strong.
My eyes dart between Jeane and Merrin as we try to reason with this being, this Ancient Prison Guardian. There’s a desperation in their voices that mirrors my own inner turmoil. We need answers—we need to know what has trapped our friends—but dealing with an entity like this requires delicacy and knowledge I fear I lack.
As the Guardian speaks of 'ancient binding', my mind races through every spell and ritual I know that could possibly be used for such a purpose. Nothing comes to mind that seems even remotely powerful enough to hold something as potent as what we can feel down here. "We are not here to challenge you," I say, my voice steadier than I feel. "Or to disturb your duties. But our companions... they mean well, even if their actions were misguided."
The Guardian's gaze falls upon me, and for a moment it seems to see right through me, past the layers of magical protection I wear, straight into the frightened core of my being.
"I sense your fear," it says, its voice a low rumble that vibrates in my bones. "And yet... there is something else too. A power, dormant but present."
I blink in surprise at this statement. A power? In me? I look down at my hands, seeing the faint tremor in them as I hold my staff. But power? No, that couldn't be right. I am a scholar, a wizard, not some latent magic wielder. "You must be mistaken," I say quickly, trying to dismiss the thought. "We are here for Halie, Merrin and Varrika. To save them. That is all."
But even as I speak, I feel that strange sensation again—the tingling in my fingertips, like a spark of static electricity. It’s stronger now, more insistent, and I can’t ignore it anymore. I look at Merrin, seeing the same look of confusion and fear on her face. Could she be feeling it too?
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what I'm about to ask. It goes against everything in me—the desire to run, to hide, to find a safe haven—but I know we have no choice. "You said you know what binds them," I say slowly, my voice dropping to a near whisper. "What is it? And how can we free them?"
