Seraphine moves forward with purpose, her eyes narrowing as she studies the ancient symbols etched into the tree root. The air around them seems to crackle with barely contained energy, and she can feel the weight of centuries pressing down upon them. "This glyph... it's older than anything I've ever encountered," she murmurs, more to herself than to her companions. "The lines here, see how they intersect? That's not just decorative—it's functional." Her fingers trace the intricate patterns, feeling a faint pulse of power beneath her touch. "Whatever this is meant to do, it's tied directly to the tower's magic. We can't ignore it."

Merrin crouches beside her, her sharp eyes scanning the area for any signs of immediate danger. "Can you tell what it does?" she asks quietly. "Because if it's connected to those skeletons or whatever else might be lurking in there, we need to know how to disable it—or at least avoid triggering it."

Seraphine's brow furrows in concentration as she continues her examination. "Not yet," she admits reluctantly. "The spellwork is... complex. Layered. I can feel the power flowing through it, but deciphering its purpose will take time—and likely a great deal more study than we have luxury for out here." She looks up at Merrin, her expression grave. "But one thing is clear: whatever this does, it's not meant to be decorative. We need to proceed with extreme caution."

Merrin nods slowly, her gaze lingering on the ominous symbols before returning to scan their surroundings once more. "Extreme caution" might be an understatement when dealing with ancient magic that seems to have a mind of its own, she thinks to herself. But what choice do they have? The tower looms ahead, its secrets waiting within—and without Seraphine's expertise, navigating whatever lies beyond those walls would be suicide.*

She straightens up, her voice low but firm as she addresses the group. "Alright, listen up. We're dealing with something old and powerful here—something that doesn't want us poking around." Her eyes meet each of her companions in turn. "Seraphine's going to keep working on this glyph, see if she can figure out what it does. While she does that, I'll scout ahead and make sure nothing else is waiting to ambush us." She pauses, her expression serious. "Stay close together. If anything feels off, even slightly, speak up immediately. We stick together, we watch each other's backs, and we get through this—together."

As the others nod in agreement, Merrin moves forward cautiously, her rogue's instincts on high alert. The forest around them seems to hold its breath, waiting...

Seraphine returns her attention to the symbols, her fingers tracing patterns as she mutters under her breath, casting minor detection spells to probe at the magical aura surrounding the glyph. She can feel it pulsing with power, ancient and malevolent, and a shiver runs down her spine despite the warmth of the summer air.

Suddenly, one of the symbols flares briefly—a deep, blood-red glow that fades almost as quickly as it appeared. Seraphine's eyes widen in alarm. "Merrin!" she hisses urgently. "I think we just triggered something!"

Merrin spins around, her hand already on her dagger as she sprints back to where Seraphine is crouched over the glyph. "What happened?" she demands, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of immediate danger.

Seraphine points at the symbol that flared. "That glyph—it just activated. I don't know what it does, but whatever it is, it's not good." She looks up at Merrin, her expression grim. "We need to move. Now. Before whatever this is meant to summon shows up."

Merrin nods sharply, already moving to gather the others. "You heard her," she says, her voice tight with tension. "Something's coming, and we don't want to be here when it arrives." She leads the way back into the cover of the trees, her heart pounding in her chest as she wonders what new horror awaits them in the depths of the forest.

The sound of leaves crunching underfoot echoes through the woods as they move quickly but quietly away from the glyph. The air seems to grow heavier with each step, the weight of ancient magic pressing down upon them. Seraphine glances back over her shoulder, half-expecting to see something terrible emerging from the shadows behind them.

As they put some distance between themselves and the activated glyph, Merrin signals for a halt. The group gathers in a small clearing, their breaths coming in quiet gasps as they exchange nervous glances. "Alright," Merrin says softly, "what did you see? What happened back there?"

Seraphine takes a deep breath before responding, her voice low and urgent. "The glyph—it's tied to the tower's defenses. When I triggered it accidentally, I saw... flashes. Glimpses of something ancient and powerful." She meets Merrin's gaze steadily. "I think we just woke up whatever was sleeping down there. And whatever it is, it's not friendly."

Merrin feels a chill run down her spine at Seraphine's words. This is exactly what she feared—they've stumbled into something far more dangerous than they bargained for. But there's no turning back now. They have to see this through, no matter the cost.

She straightens up, squaring her shoulders as she addresses the group. "Okay," she says firmly, "here's what we're going to do. Seraphine, you keep working on deciphering that glyph—we need to understand what we're dealing with here." Her eyes meet each of her companions in turn. "The rest of us are going to set up a defensive perimeter. If whatever was sleeping down there is on its way up, we need to be ready for it."

As the others nod and move to take up positions, Merrin crouches low, her senses on high alert as she scans the darkness for any sign of movement. The forest seems unnaturally still, as if even the animals have sensed the ancient evil stirring beneath their feet.

Seraphine returns her attention to the glyph, her brow furrowed in concentration as she casts spell after spell, trying to pierce the veil of magic surrounding the ancient symbols. She can feel it pulsing with power, growing stronger with each passing moment.

Suddenly, a low rumble echoes through the ground, barely audible at first but growing louder with each passing second. Merrin's head snaps up, her eyes widening in alarm as she realizes what the sound means. "Everyone!" she hisses urgently. "Something's happening down by the tower!"

The group freezes, their hearts pounding in unison as they strain to hear over the sudden cacophony of rustling leaves and snapping twigs. Whatever is emerging from the depths of the earth below, it's big—and it's coming up fast.

Seraphine abandons her attempts at deciphering the glyph, sprinting back to Merrin's side as the rumbling intensifies. "What do you see?" she demands, her voice tight with fear and excitement.

Merrin points ahead of them, where a section of the forest floor seems to be... moving. "There," she breathes, her eyes wide with horror and fascination. "Look—something's breaking through the ground."

As they watch in horrified awe, a massive shape begins to emerge from the earth—a creature unlike anything they've ever seen before. Its body is a writhing mass of shadow and bone, held together by what looks like ancient, decaying magic. Eyes glow with an otherworldly light, fixed upon them with malevolent intent.

Merrin feels a moment of pure terror as she realizes what they're facing. "It's the ward spirit," she gasps, her voice barely audible over the creature's bone-chilling roar. "And it's hungry."

The ancient guardian of the tower looms before them now, its power radiating outwards in waves that make the very air crackle with energy. This is what they've been warned about—the thing that has kept adventurers away for centuries.

But there's no turning back now. They've awakened it, and it wants their essences—body and soul.
