Round 34 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Merrin leads the way, her footsteps quiet on the forest floor. The darkness seems to close in around her, but she presses on, her eyes fixed ahead. Varrika follows closely behind, her hand resting on the hilt of her mace. Jeane's angry words echo through the trees, fading into the distance as they disappear from view. As they walk, the silence is broken by the rustling of leaves and snapping of twigs beneath their feet. The sound grows louder, and suddenly, a figure darts out from the underbrush, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light.
The sound of leaves crunching underfoot echoes through the forest as Merrin leads the way, her rogue's instincts guiding them deeper into the woods away from the accursed tower. Jeane's angry words still hang heavy in the air, fading with each step they take. Varrika follows close behind, her hand never straying far from her mace hilt.
Suddenly, a figure darts out from the underbrush ahead of them, its eyes glowing an eerie green in the darkness. It stands there for a moment before speaking: "Well now," the voice is smooth and unsettlingly calm, "what have we here? A band of adventurers fleeing from their own cowardice?"
Merrin stops in her tracks, her hand moving instinctively towards a hidden blade at her side. "Who are you?" she asks, her tone sharp but cautious.
The figure steps forward into what little moonlight filters through the canopy above. He appears to be an elderly man dressed in tattered robes, his hair long and wild, face lined with age and wisdom—or perhaps madness. "I am Elric," he replies, "The Hermit of these woods for... longer than any sane mind.".
I feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up as this strange old man, Elric, speaks. His voice is deceptively calm, but there's an undercurrent of something... off about it. Merrin’s hand goes to her blade, a wise precaution given our current vulnerability, and I instinctively step closer to Varrika, my heart hammering in my chest.
My eyes dart around the clearing, taking in the shadows cast by the towering trees, the eerie silence that has fallen save for Elric's unsettling presence. The air feels thick with magic here, ancient and potent, and it seems to cling to him like a second skin.
"Elric, you say?" I ask, my voice steadier than I feel. "What do you know of our cowardice? We've not fled from anything."
My mind races as I try to determine if he's truly a threat or just another eccentric fixture of this accursed place. The way he stands there, so still and knowing, makes my skin crawl. He seems too aware of us, too interested in our failure at the tower entrance.
I take a slow step forward, my hands raised slightly in a gesture of non-aggression, but my fingers twitch near my own staff, a spell already forming in the back of my mind. If this is a trap, I intend to be ready for it.
"You speak as if you've been watching us," I say, my tone dropping to a low murmur. "Who are you really? And what business do you have with our party?"
I take a step forward, my hand still resting lightly on the dagger at my hip. "Elric, you say?" I keep my tone even, but there's a sharp edge beneath the words. "We've not fled from anything. Our cleric made a choice, one we all respected."
I glance back at Halie, catching her eye. She nods once, firmly, and I feel a rush of pride. "We won't be bullied by threats or cajoled by empty promises," I continue, turning back to face the old man. "If you know something about this tower, speak plainly. Otherwise, we've no time for riddles."
My eyes narrow as I take in his appearance—his wild hair, the tattered robes that seem to absorb what little light filters through the trees. There's an aura around him, ancient and potent, but I can't quite place it. "You say you're a hermit," I murmur, more to myself than to him, "but I wonder... are you friend or foe?"
I take another step forward, my hand drifting away from the dagger to rest on the small pouch at my belt. The one with my lockpicks and thieves' tools. If this is a trap, I mean to be ready for it.
