Round 23

Phase: escalating

The air in the chamber crackled with arcane energy as Jeane completed her spell, a wave of shimmering distortion washing outwards from her extended claw. The spell wasn't aimed at whatever lurked within the darkness, but rather at the very fabric of reality around it—an attempt to create a localized field that might disrupt magical traps or weaken any creatures attempting to emerge.
The effect was immediate and unsettling. As the wave of magic passed through the yawning maw, the air inside seemed to ripple like water disturbed by a stone toss, and a chorus of high-pitched squeaks and clicks erupted from the depths. Whatever was down there, it didn't like the arcane interference one bit.
Merrin's crossbow remained steady, her dark eyes tracking every movement in the shadows. "Something's coming up," she muttered, her voice tight with controlled fear. "And I don't think it's friendly."
Seraphine had managed to regain her balance, but her face was pale, her elegant features strained as she focused on maintaining a protective ward around herself. The psychic probing of the ward spirit had left her feeling exposed and violated in a way that no physical attack ever could.
Varrika stood firm at the forefront, her greatsword held ready. "Whatever it is," the dwarf growled, "it's big enough to make noise like that. We need to move—either forward through the gate or back out of this cursed tower before whatever's in there decides to show itself properly."
Jeane's crimson eyes gleamed with arcane power as she prepared another spell, her voluptuous form tensed for action. "The ward spirit is getting stronger," she warned, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can feel it feeding on our fear and uncertainty. We need to break its hold before it gains enough power to manifest fully."
The scraping and scuttling grew louder still, accompanied now by the wet sound of something heavy dragging across stone. The air inside the tower seemed to grow colder, as if the temperature itself was dropping in response to whatever ancient evil was stirring beneath them.
Merrin glanced at Seraphine, then back at the dark maw. "We can't stay here," she said, her voice barely audible over the ominous sounds echoing up from below. "But if we go through that gate, we'll be trapped inside with whatever's down there and whatever's waiting beyond. We need a plan."
Seraphine met Merrin's gaze, her expression grave. "I can try to analyze the ward magic on the gate," she offered hesitantly, "but the spirit is too strong. It might... interfere with my concentration." Her hands trembled slightly as she spoke, a visible reminder of the psychic violation they'd all experienced.
Varrika's weathered face set into a determined scowl. "Then we deal with whatever's coming up first," she declared, her voice carrying through the tense silence. "We can't fight our way through if we're too busy looking over our shoulders at whatever's climbing out of the floor."
Jeane nodded slowly, her attention divided between the dark maw and the rune-covered gate behind them. "Agreed. But be ready—whatever is down there, it's not natural. And it's hungry." The glyphs on her skin pulsed with each word, as if echoing her unease.
The sound of movement intensified, accompanied now by a low, rumbling growl that seemed to vibrate through the very stones of the tower. Whatever was coming, it was almost here.
Merrin's finger tightened on the crossbow trigger, her eyes never leaving the darkness. "Everyone ready?" she asked, her voice barely more than a breath.
Four pairs of eyes met hers—Seraphine's wide with apprehension, Varrika's steady and determined, Jeane's glowing with arcane power focused into deadly precision. They were ready. But were they prepared for what was about to emerge from the depths of this cursed tower?
