As Seraphine struggles to regain her footing, the ward spirit's psychic probing subsides, leaving behind a lingering sense of unease. The air in the chamber seems to vibrate with tension, as if the entity's malevolent presence has grown stronger. Merrin readies her crossbow, her eyes locked on the gate, while Jeane begins to chant in a language that sounds like dark music. Suddenly, the ground shudders beneath their feet, and the sound of scraping and scuttling grows louder. The skeletons halt their advance, their bony arms frozen in place as if drawn back by an unseen force. A section of the wall behind them bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth. The party exchanges uneasy glances, sensing that their situation has just taken a dire turn.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's heart leaps into her throat at the sound of scraping and scuttling echoing from the darkness. She whirls around, crossbow at the ready, her eyes straining to pierce the shadows behind them. The sight of the wall bursting open, revealing a yawning maw that seems to devour the very light, sends a chill down her spine.

She feels the ward spirit's malevolent presence growing stronger, its psychic probing intensifying until it feels like hot needles being driven into her brain. Merrin grits her teeth, fighting against the intrusion even as she keeps her gaze fixed on the dark opening.

This is it, she thinks to herself, her mind racing to process the situation. Whatever's down there... it knows we're here. And it's not happy about us poking around its ancient prison. She glances at Jeane, seeing the succubus's face contorted in concentration as she chants in that dark, musical language. Whatever spell she's weaving, Merrin hopes it's strong enough to hold whatever's emerging from that hole at bay.*

The party's formation has shifted, with Halie and Seraphine taking up defensive positions on either side of the gate while Varrika stands at the ready, her greatsword held high. Merrin knows they need to be prepared for anything that might come bursting out of that darkness.

She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever's about to happen next. Alright, team, she says, her voice steady even as her heart pounds in her chest. Looks like we've got company. Whatever's down there... it knows we're here. And it's not happy about us poking around its ancient prison. Merrin keeps her crossbow trained on the darkness, her finger hovering over the trigger. Jeane, whatever spell you're working... make it count. We need all the help we can get right now. She glances at Seraphine, seeing the wizard's face pale and drawn after that psychic probing from the ward spirit. You alright there, Seraphine? Merrin asks, genuine concern in her voice. Whatever that thing is... it's strong. And it doesn't like us being here. Merrin's mind is racing, trying to come up with a plan of action even as she keeps watch for any sign of movement from the dark maw. Halie, see if you can sense what's coming out of there. Maybe your connection to nature can give us some warning. She turns to Varrika, a grim smile on her face even as the sounds of scuttling grow louder. And Varrika... be ready to swing that big sword of yours. We might need it more than ever right now. Merrin takes a deep breath, feeling the weight of her crossbow in her hands and the thrum of tension in the air around them. This is it, team, she says, her voice low and serious. Whatever's about to come through that hole... we need to be ready for it. And we need to work together if we want to survive this. She feels the ward spirit's psychic probing grow stronger, its malevolent presence seeming to fill the chamber with a sense of impending doom. So let's show this thing what we're made of, Merrin says, her eyes locked on the darkness. And hope that Jeane's spell is strong enough to hold whatever's coming at bay. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever's about to happen next. Because whatever's down there... it's not going to be easy. But we've faced worse before. And we'll face worse again if we don't stop whatever ancient evil is lurking in this tower. Merrin keeps her crossbow trained on the darkness, her finger hovering over the trigger as the sounds of scuttling grow louder and the ward spirit's psychic probing intensifies. So let's do this, team, she says, her voice low and determined. Let's show whatever's down there what we're made of. And with that, she waits, ready to face whatever emerges from that dark, gaping maw.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stumble back, my mind reeling from the psychic onslaught of the ward spirit. It felt like hot needles being driven into my brain, a searing agony that left me gasping for breath. But as I struggle to regain my footing, a new and more immediate threat looms before us all. The sound of scraping and scuttling grows louder, and with a sickening crack, a section of the wall behind Merrin bursts open, revealing a dark, yawning maw that seems to devour the very light. My heart hammers in my chest as I see the shadows within the darkness begin to move, coalescing into a shape that is undeniably monstrous.
I can feel the malevolent presence of whatever creature is emerging from that hole, its ancient power radiating outwards like a physical force. It’s different from the ward spirit—a deep, primal malice that feels less like a guardian and more like a beast awakening from a long slumber.
My hands instinctively move to the spell components at my belt, my fingers closing around a vial of shimmering powder and a small iron rod. I know we need to act fast if we want to survive this encounter, but a part of me hesitates. This creature... it’s ancient. Far older than anything I’ve ever faced before, even in my studies of forbidden lore. And its very presence seems to be unraveling the threads of reality around us, making my magic feel tenuous and uncertain.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what’s to come. Whatever this thing is, it knows we’re here now. And it clearly doesn’t want us poking around its ancient prison. I glance at Jeane, seeing the succubus still chanting in that dark language, her wings flared behind her like a shield against the encroaching darkness. Her spell seems to be holding the creature at bay for now, but I can feel the pressure building, a psychic weight pressing down on us all.
I turn to Merrin, seeing the rogue’s crossbow trained on the darkness, her expression one of grim determination. We need to be ready for anything that comes out of there, I say, my voice strained but firm. My mind is racing, trying to remember every scrap of lore I know about ancient prisons and the entities they hold captive. This isn’t just a random monster—it’s a piece of something far bigger, far more dangerous than we could have imagined.
As if in response to my thoughts, the ground beneath our feet begins to tremble again, a low rumble that seems to come from deep within the earth itself. The skeletons around us clatter and fall, their bones scattering across the stone floor. And then, from the depths of the dark maw, a single glowing eye opens, fixed and malevolent, staring directly at me. I feel a jolt of primal fear course through my veins, a chilling certainty that this creature has chosen its first target.
I raise my staff, the iron rod humming with arcane energy as I begin to weave a shield spell around myself. It’s a simple protection against physical harm, but it will have to do for now. Whatever comes out of that hole, we need to be ready. And if we can’t stop it... then we need to find a way to seal this prison back up again.
My gaze flickers to the ancient gate, its runes still pulsing with dark power. The key Jeane found on the tree root suddenly feels heavier in my pocket, a symbol of the immense task that lies ahead of us. We came here for the Time-Splitting Sword, but now... now we may be facing something far worse than any weapon.
I take a deep breath, feeling the air thicken with magic and malice. Whatever this creature is, whatever ancient evil it represents, one thing is clear: we cannot leave this place without confronting it. And I have a sinking feeling that the battle for our very souls is about to begin.
With a final surge of willpower, I complete my shield spell, the air around me shimmering with a faint, silver light. It’s not much, but it might just be enough to give us an edge. Now all we can do is wait for whatever monstrosity the ward spirit has unleashed upon us.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika's eyes narrow as she sees the wall burst open, revealing a dark, yawning maw. The dwarf warrior's grip tightens on her greatsword, the heavy weapon ready in her hands. She can feel the malevolent presence emanating from the depths of that hole, a primal malice that seems to seep into her very bones.

She takes a step forward, putting herself between the emerging threat and her party members. It's what she does best—taking the brunt of any danger so that the others might survive. But even as she readies herself for whatever creature is about to emerge, Varrika finds herself feeling a sense of unease.

This... this isn't like any monster she's faced before. It feels ancient, far older than anything she's encountered in her many years as a fighter. And the way it seems to be unraveling the very fabric of reality around them... it's unsettling in a way that goes beyond mere fear.

Still, Varrika doesn't hesitate. She's no stranger to facing down the unknown, and she'll be damned if she lets some ancient evil get the best of her now. As the sounds of scuttling grow louder and the ward spirit's psychic probing intensifies, the dwarf warrior takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever's about to come through that hole.

She glances at her companions, seeing the determination on their faces even as they grapple with their own fears. Merrin has her crossbow trained on the darkness, ready to fire at the first sign of movement. Jeane is still chanting in that dark, musical language, her wings flared behind her like a shield against the encroaching shadows. Seraphine is weaving some sort of protection spell around herself, the air around the wizard shimmering with a faint silver light.

And Halie... Halie is standing there, her hands outstretched towards the dark maw, as if trying to sense whatever creature is about to emerge. The druid's eyes are closed, her face a mask of concentration as she reaches out with her connection to nature, seeking some understanding of the threat they face.

Varrika nods to herself, feeling a sense of purpose settle over her. They may be facing something ancient and powerful, but they have each other. And together, they've faced worse and come out on top. This creature... this thing from an ancient prison... it may be different, but Varrika knows that the bonds of friendship and trust that tie them together are stronger than any evil, no matter how old or malevolent.

She takes another step forward, her greatsword held high as she readies herself for whatever emerges from that hole. The dwarf warrior's muscles tense, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice. She can feel the weight of her weapon in her hands, the cool metal of the blade a familiar comfort against the uncertainty of the situation.

And then, from the depths of the darkness, a single glowing eye opens. It fixes on Varrika, and she feels a jolt of primal fear course through her veins. But the dwarf doesn't hesitate. She meets that gaze head-on, her own eyes narrowed in defiance as she prepares to face whatever monstrosity has chosen them as its first target.

Whatever comes out of that hole, whatever ancient evil it represents... Varrika will be ready. She's faced down demons and dragons before, and she's not about to let some unknown creature from an ancient prison get the best of her now. With a deep breath, the dwarf warrior takes another step forward, her greatsword held high as she waits for the battle to begin.

It's time to show this thing what they're made of.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's eyes narrow with concentration as she feels the ancient power emanating from the dark maw, her wings instinctively flaring wider in a defensive stance. The glyphs on her skin pulse faster in response to the malevolent energy that threatens to overwhelm them all. She completes one last phrase of her arcane chant and gestures sharply with one clawed finger, unleashing a wave of disruptive magic towards the opening. It's not a direct attack—she's learned from experience that dealing with ancient prisons requires subtlety—but rather an attempt to stabilize the space around the emergence point and contain whatever comes through. "Everyone brace!" she calls out, her voice sharp but controlled. "Whatever that is... it's old enough to make my skin crawl."
