Round 14

Phase: escalating

The creature's form begins to shift and writhe in response, its twisted flesh rippling like living darkness. The air around it grows colder, and the ward's magic pulses stronger, as if sensing the creature's increasing power. The creature's voice grates against their ears: "You have disturbed the balance of the tower's magic. The ward will not let you pass without a test." My eyes narrow as I take in the scene—our apparent options laid out before us like a twisted menu. Behind me, I hear Varrika’s suggestion: “Maybe we should just smash through it?” Her voice carries an eagerness that makes me wince internally. The idea of brute-forcing our way past such obviously dangerous magic is... concerning, to say the least.
I step forward, my crimson gaze fixed on the writhing entity. "A test?" My voice cuts through the oppressive atmosphere with a sharp clarity. "What kind of test? And what happens if we fail it?" The creature's form shimmers, its outline becoming more defined even as it seems to dissolve into shadow and substance simultaneously. When it speaks again, its voice carries an unsettling note of glee: "The trials are many, little ones. Some of strength, some of cunning, some of... other qualities." Its eyes fix on me with a predatory intensity that makes my skin crawl. "And the price of failure? Oh, that would be... severe. The tower's magic would consume you whole, your very essence fueling its dark power forever and ever."
I feel Seraphine shift beside me, her earlier academic interest replaced by a visible wariness. "Consumed?" she echoes, her voice barely above a whisper. "That seems... extreme." I resist the urge to roll my eyes. Of course she'd focus on the existential horror aspect first. "Indeed," I reply coolly, already calculating the magical signatures I can sense emanating from the entity.* "But perhaps we can find a way to... negotiate?" The creature's laughter fills the air, a sound like shattering glass mixed with dripping water. "Negotiate? You have no power here, little sorceress. Only the trials hold meaning."
I feel a wave of irritation wash over me—both at Varrika’s simplistic solution and now this entity's condescending attitude. "Fine," I snap, my patience wearing thin. "Then tell us what these trials entail. And which path offers the greatest chance of... success." The creature's form solidifies for a moment, its grin widening impossibly. "Ah, now you ask the right questions. Very well—choose your path wisely." It gestures towards three distinct openings that seem to have appeared in the air around us:
- A narrow stone passageway descending into darkness, ancient runes glowing along its edges.
- A twisted corridor of living wood, roots and branches writhing as if alive.
- A shimmering portal of pure magical energy, pulsing with power that makes my teeth ache.
The choice is laid before us, each path more ominous than the last. "Ladies," I say, turning to face the group,* "it seems we have options. Though I'm not entirely sure any of them qualify as 'safe.'"
