Round 15

Phase: escalating

The ground rumbled and burst open with a sudden explosion of dirt and debris, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seemed to stretch down into the depths of the earth. A low, rumbling sound echoed through the chamber, growing louder by the second as something within began to stir. The party stumbled backward, caught off guard by the sudden eruption.
Jeane stepped forward, her crimson eyes gleaming with a mixture of excitement and trepidation as she took in the scene before them. "It appears we have our first trial," she said, her voice steady despite the tension in the air. "The tunnel of doom... or perhaps an invitation to something far more sinister." The air around them crackled with an otherworldly energy, thick and heavy with a power that felt both ancient and alive.
Halie stared at the wall, her mind racing. Something was off about this whole situation—the magic felt wrong, the air was thick with something other than just dust and decay, and that ward spirit... it had tasted them somehow. She gripped her holy symbol tighter, feeling its warmth against her palm. Wait—warmth? Her brow furrowed. It wasn't supposed to feel warm, was it?
"Everyone," Halie said slowly, her voice tight with concern, "does your holy symbol or weapon feel... strange?" She looked around at the others, her blue-grey eyes filled with worry.
Jeane's attention snapped to Halie, a fresh jolt of unease shooting through her. Her own weapons and symbols felt fine—cold iron and silver, familiar and comforting in her hands—but Halie was no fool. If she sensed something amiss, there was likely truth to it. "Halie raises an excellent point," the succubus said, her tone measured and analytical. "This magic isn't just ancient; it's sentient in a way I've never encountered before. A ward that can 'taste' our essences...
Merrin listened intently as Jeane spoke, her mind already racing through the tactical implications. Halie's warning about their gear feeling 'hungry' sent a fresh jolt of unease through her—she was right, something had definitely changed since they arrived. The magic in this place felt... alive. And hungry.
"Alright," Merrin muttered under her breath, her eyes scanning the maw and the surrounding area, "let's assume this magic is now aware of each of our strengths and weaknesses. That means it can target us more effectively." She glanced at Seraphine, noting the elf's pale face and wide eyes. "We need to proceed with extreme caution. Whatever lies beyond that wall...
Seraphine took a deep breath, trying to calm the frantic beating of her heart as she stared at the maw. The air around it crackled with an unfamiliar energy, one that felt both ancient and alive in a way no magic should be. This was beyond anything she'd ever encountered in her studies—this magic was sentient, aware, possibly even hungry.
"This is unlike anything I've ever encountered," she murmured, more to herself than anyone else. Her eyes darted around the group, gauging their reactions. Halie's concern about her holy symbol feeling 'hungry' sent a chill down her spine. The thought that this magic might already be affecting them...
Varrika glared at the maw, her hand tightening on the hilt of her mace. Every instinct in her screamed to charge forward, to meet whatever lies ahead head-on. But Halie's warning about their gear feeling 'hungry' and Jeane's talk of this magic being able to taste their essences... it gave her pause.
I turn to Merrin, seeing the tactical wheels turning in her eyes. "So what's the play here?" she asked gruffly. "We can't just stand around all day waiting for something to happen. That tunnel ain't gonna explain itself."
