Phase: escalating

The air grew thick with otherworldly energy the moment the gate creaked open, pressing in on them like a physical weight. The ground trembled beneath their feet, and each breath felt heavy, as if the very atmosphere was resisting their presence. Varrika's hand tightened around her mace, the familiar grip offering little comfort against such palpable wrongness. Seraphine's sharp eyes widened, taking in every detail of the dark passageway that yawned before them like a hungry maw. The scraping sounds from below had ceased, replaced by an even more unsettling silence—a quiet that seemed to strain her ears with its absence of sound.
And then, as if summoned by their trespass, a figure stepped out of the shadows at the corridor's end. It was humanoid in shape, but any resemblance to mortal form ended there. The creature's presence radiated an aura of malevolent power that made the air around it shimmer like heat haze over a summer road. Its eyes glowed with an unholy light, fixed upon them with predatory intensity.
Jeane stepped forward without hesitation, her crimson gaze locked onto the monstrous apparition. The tall succubus woman's wings unfurled slowly behind her—a dark expanse of leathery membrane stretching wide before folding back against her back with a sound like old cloth tearing. Her voice cut through the oppressive silence, cold and even: "We didn't come here to pay prices," she said, each word measured and deliberate. "We came for what's ours by right of conquest."
Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine despite the thick heat of the chamber. The creature’s eyes remained fixed on Jeane, its gaze a physical weight that pressed against her skin. She could feel it—the ward's magic thrumming in the air around them now, a tangible presence that seemed to pulse with each beat of her heart. This wasn't the abstract threat of ancient seals anymore; this thing was real and present and utterly terrifying.
She moved closer to Jeane instinctively, though the proximity offered little comfort against something so far beyond mortal comprehension. Her voice dropped to a low murmur meant only for the sorceress's ears: "It seems we've found our target," she said, her tone professional despite the fear coiling in her gut like a serpent preparing to strike. "But this isn't what I expected. A ward spirit made manifest? That's... concerning." She swallowed hard, the taste of old magic still lingering on her tongue.
Varrika shifted her grip on the mace, the worn haft a comforting presence in her calloused hands. The dwarf woman's scarred face set into grim lines as she stared down the creature. "A spirit of place," she muttered, glancing sideways at Seraphine. "That makes a twisted kind of sense. But what good is knowing its nature if we can't find a way past it?" Her eyes flicked back to Jeane, noting the demonic sorceress's taunting tone. It was a dangerous game, provoking something this ancient and powerful—something that clearly viewed them as trespassers rather than guests.
The very stones of the corridor seemed to hum with anticipation, vibrating with an energy that set her teeth on edge. The air around them pulsed with each beat of the creature's presence, thick and resistant, making every breath feel like effort. Varrika could feel it in her bones—the wrongness of this place, the ancient power that saturated every inch of the tower's interior. And now, they stood face to face with its guardian.
