The air grew thick and difficult to breathe, the very stones seeming to hum with wrongness. The dark maw in the wall gaped like a wound, its depths echoing with frantic scraping sounds that set teeth on edge. Halie's eyes widened as she focused her senses on the magical barrier, her face pale in the dim light. Jeane moved closer to Seraphine, her voice low and urgent. "This isn't simple ward magic—it tasted me. It's sentient." Her crimson gaze remained fixed on the wall where Merrin stood, too close to that yawning darkness for comfort.

Merrin swallowed hard, trying to push down the rising fear. This wasn't what she'd signed up for—a scout, not some damned hero facing down ancient evils in crumbling towers. But as Varrika stepped forward, her mace gripped tightly, Merrin felt a surge of relief. They'd come too far to turn back now. Seraphine took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. The magic here was wrong—old and hungry, clinging to her skin like oily residue that she could taste in her mouth.

Varrika's voice cut through the tension. "If these glyphs are part of the ward itself, then breaking the lock might be... problematic." Her gaze flicked between Merrin working at the mechanism and the strange symbols etched into the stone around the gate. They seemed to writhe under her scrutiny, their meanings shifting like shadows in a candlelight.

Seraphine spoke next, her voice tight with apprehension. "Whatever's below... it knows we're here now." The wizard's sharp eyes darted between the frantic scraping sounds coming from the dark maw in the wall and the strange symbols etched into the stone around the gate. They seemed to pulse with an inner light, their meanings shifting like shadows in a flame.

Jeane hissed, her wings snapping taut. "This place... it was never meant for the living. The glyphs aren't warnings—they're breadcrumbs, leading us deeper into its belly." The succubus's crimson gaze fixed on Merrin, a dangerous edge to her voice. "We need to move—now! Before whatever's been stirring below has time to fully awaken and swarm us."

Halie stepped back from the gate, her holy symbol clutched tightly in her fist. The magic radiating from it felt... wrong. Corrupted. Her skin crawled at its touch. "This isn't going to be simple." The cleric's eyes flickered between Jeane's hissed warning and Merrin working at the lock. "Whatever's feeding this ward, it's ancient and hungry. We're not just dealing with traps anymore—She turned to Jeane, her expression grave—we're dealing with something that wants us alive so it can... consume our power."

The air grew thicker still, the ancient magic of the ward pulsing through the very stones at their feet. The scraping sounds from below grew louder, more urgent, a frantic scuttling that seemed to echo up from the very depths of the earth.
