The chamber air grew thick and difficult to breathe, the very stones seeming to hum with wrongness. The dark maw in the wall gaped like a wound, its depths echoing with frantic scraping sounds that set teeth on edge. Halie's eyes widened as she focused her senses on the magical barrier, her face pale in the dim light.

Jeane moved closer to Seraphine, her voice low and urgent. "This isn't simple ward magic—it tasted me. It's sentient." Her crimson gaze remained fixed on the wall where Merrin stood, too close to that yawning darkness for comfort.

Merrin swallowed hard, trying to push down the rising fear. This wasn't what she'd signed up for—a scout, not some damned hero facing down ancient evils in crumbling towers. But as Varrika stepped forward, her mace gripped tightly, Merrin felt a surge of relief. They'd come too far to turn back now.

Seraphine took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. The magic here was wrong—old and hungry, clinging to her skin like oily residue that she could taste in her mouth. As Varrika and Merrin exchanged tense looks, she stepped forward, her voice barely above a whisper. "We need to be careful. This isn't just about getting past a gate."

Halie's hands hovered over the magical barrier, her expression grave. "It pulses like a heartbeat," she said softly. "Something ancient and... alive." Her holy symbol offered no protection here, just cold metal against her palm.

Varrika listened intently as Halie voiced her concerns, her scarred fingers tightening around her mace. This wasn't just about locks or barriers—the magic here was sentient, possibly even predatory. They were dealing with something that could think—and possibly eat them alive. Her grip tightened further, the rough wood of the weapon a comforting presence in her hands.

The air grew heavier still, the scraping sounds from within the darkness seeming to intensify as if sensing their hesitation. The very stones seemed to lean inward, eager to close around them all.
