The liminal wretch’s form shimmered and shifted once more, its voice taking on a more persuasive tone as it spoke again, addressing Halie directly. “Your companion fears what she does not understand,” it hissed, “but I offer true protection. The darkness beyond this chamber is unlike anything you have faced before—only one bound by faith can truly shield you from its corrupting influence.” The creature’s eyes glowed with an eerie intensity, fixed unblinkingly on Halie as it continued. “Think of the good you could do with such a guardian—think of the lives you could save!”

Halie felt her resolve wavering under the weight of the liminal wretch's words. The idea of facing whatever lay beyond this chamber without protection was terrifying, and part of her—a deep-seated need to help others, to be a force for good in this dark world—was drawn to the promise of being able to save lives. But something about the creature’s presence, the way its very form seemed to crawl with corruption, filled her with revulsion. She glanced at Jeane and Merrin, seeking their counsel even as she wrestled with her own conflicted emotions.

Merrin’s hand moved from the crossbow to his dagger hilt, his fingers curling around the familiar grip as he considered the liminal wretch's offer. Fifty bolts might not be enough against whatever lay ahead, but a blade in his hand was better than no blade at all. His rogue's instincts screamed at him to cut and run, to find another way through this mess—but years of survival had taught him that sometimes the only choice was between bad options and worse ones.

Jeane’s wings beat once, a sharp gesture of impatience that sent a gust of air swirling through the chamber. “And what happens when your definition of 'darkness' includes us?” she snarled, her crimson eyes blazing with barely contained fury. “We’ve seen enough ancient entities in this place to know they rarely play by the rules we understand.” She took another step forward, positioning herself between Halie and the liminal wretch—a wall of succubus fury ready to be unleashed if needed.

The obsidian guardian remained utterly still, its presence a heavy weight in the room that seemed to absorb sound and motion alike. The pulsing core at its center flickered ominously, casting shifting patterns of light and shadow across the chamber walls—each beat a silent reminder of the ancient power contained within this stone form.

Jeane’s wings beat once, a sharp gesture of impatience that sent a gust of air swirling through the chamber. “And what happens when your definition of 'darkness' includes us?” she snarling.
