The obsidian guardian’s core pulsed rhythmically, drawing Halie’s holy symbol towards it like iron to lodestone. The silver artifact began to glow, its light spilling across the chamber floor in a warm pool that starkly contrasted the cold stone and ancient shadows. Seraphine felt a chill run down her spine as the creature spoke of them as potential sacrifices, its words echoing through the cold air of the chamber. She found herself glancing around at her companions—Halie’s eyes wide with both fear and fascination, Varrika’s hand tight on her mace hilt, Merrin’s expression unreadable but his stance tense.

The guardian’s gaze shifted suddenly to the partially open door, its eyes flashing with an intense, predatory focus. A low growl emanated from beyond the threshold, causing everyone present to tense further. The air seemed to thicken with anticipation—or perhaps warning.

Jeane stepped forward, her voice soft but steady as she addressed the obsidian creature. “What do you mean, a test of faith? Surely there are other ways we can prove our worth.” Her crimson eyes flashed with dark amusement, wings stretching wide before folding back against her voluptuous form. The succubus’s natural charm was evident even in this dire situation.

Seraphine’s keen mind raced, trying to decipher the creature’s true purpose. Its demand for a sacrifice felt ancient and hungry, an echo from a time when such offerings were commonplace. She could feel the tension coiling tighter around them all, a physical pressure that seemed to squeeze the breath from her lungs. Jeane’s offer to channel demonic magic was bold, perhaps even reckless, but it was also their best chance at understanding what this creature truly desired.

The wizard watched as Halie was presented with her own test, the liminal wretch emerging from the darkness to stand before the cleric. She could see the fear in Halie’s eyes even as she stood tall, the young woman’s faith a beacon in this chamber of shadows. Seraphine knew they had to tread carefully—one misstep could trigger wards and seal their fate.

Varrika gripped her mace tighter, knuckles white, as Jeane began her dangerous channeling. The air crackled with dark energy, raising every hair on the dwarf’s body. Part of her wanted to shout a warning, to tell the succubus this was too reckless. But another part, the battle-worn part that had seen magic both wondrous and terrible, knew they had no choice. Halie faced her test with the liminal wretch, and Varrika could see the fear in her eyes even as she stood tall. Her heart ached for the young cleric, but Jeane was right—their situation demanded desperate measures.

The chamber seemed to hold its breath as the two tests unfolded simultaneously, the fate of the entire party hanging in the balance. The growling beyond the door grew louder, a reminder that time was running out and new horrors approached.
