As I finish speaking, the creature's form blurs once more, its core pulsing with an energy that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol towards it. The symbol's light begins to envelop the creature, casting a warm glow over the chamber floor. A low growl echoes from beyond the gate, causing everyone to tense. Suddenly, the obsidian guardian speaks again, its voice dripping with malice. "The ritual is progressing, but time is running out. You have one hour to convince me that you are worthy of passage." The creature's gaze turns to Halie, and it says, "You, Halie, are the first to be tested. If you fail, your companions will suffer the consequences."

The creature raises its hand, and a dark portal opens before Halie. A figure emerges from the shadows, its form shifting like mist. This is the Liminal Wretch, a creature designed to weed out those who would desecrate ancient artifacts. Its eyes glow with an otherworldly energy as it speaks, "Halie, your faith is strong, but can you resist my temptation?"

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane’s crimson eyes flash with dark amusement as she steps forward, her leathery wings stretching wide before folding back against her voluptuous form. "Oh please," she scoffs at the liminal wretch, "as if faith were the only currency in this world. You may be ancient, but you're clearly out of touch."

She turns to face Halie directly, her voice dropping to a silken purr that carries undertones of threat. "Listen closely, my sweet Halie—this creature is testing our essence, not our piety. It wants the very nature of what we are." Her gaze rakes over the party members appraisingly before settling back on the liminal wretch.

To Merrin: "Your cunning is an asset, yes—but we need to understand what this entity truly desires before offering it something precious." She glances at Varrika, a hint of approval in her crimson eyes. "Courage has its place, but brute force won't satisfy arcane hunger."

Then to Halie again: "You stand at the threshold of temptation, my dear. But remember—faith is merely one flavor of power." Jeane raises her hand, dark energy crackling between her fingers as she addresses the obsidian guardian directly.

"You say we have an hour? Very well—put your test to me instead," she challenges the creature, "and I'll show you what true essence tastes like. Channeling demonic magic is my specialty, and I wager it will satisfy whatever ritual requirement you claim to need."

She turns in a slow circle, addressing everyone with her characteristic sly smile. "This way we buy time while satisfying magical requirements on our terms—we test the boundaries of what it will accept before committing to something drastic. And if Halie fails…" Jeane's smile doesn't quite reach her eyes as she looks at her companion, "well, then we'll simply have to ensure she doesn't."

To Seraphine: "Prepare a counter-spell just in case—if this goes sideways, we may need magical defense." Her tone shifts back to the liminal wretch. "So what say you? Will my dark essence suffice for your little test, or do you insist on playing with mortals who don't know their own power?"

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The obsidian creature’s words hang heavy in the air, its demand for a sacrifice an unnerving echo of something ancient and hungry. I can feel the tension coiling tighter around us all, a physical pressure that seems to squeeze the breath from my lungs. Jeane's offer to channel demonic magic is bold, perhaps even reckless, but it's also our best chance at understanding what this creature truly desires.
I watch as Halie is presented with her own test, the liminal wretch emerging from the dark portal with an aura of malevolent purpose. My heart clenches with fear for my friend, but Jeane is right—this isn’t just about faith anymore. It's about the core of what makes each of us who we are.
My gaze drifts to Varrika, her posture radiating a fierce determination that borders on foolhardiness. She sees this as a physical challenge, a test of strength against a foe she can’t even properly fight. But that’s not what the creature wants. It needs something far more intangible.
As Jeane begins to channel power, I move closer to her, ready with the counter-spell she requested. The air crackles with arcane energy, dark and potent, raising the hairs on my arms. This is dangerous, yes, but it’s also our only option if we want to survive this.
The obsidian guardian watches impassively as Jeane works, its eyes glowing with an intense, predatory light. I can feel its attention shift back and forth between us, assessing, judging. We are pieces on a board, and the game has just begun.
I turn to Merrin, my expression serious. "We need to be ready for anything," I whisper, "this test isn't going to be kind."
To Varrika, I add, "Hold your ground, but don't let anger cloud your judgment. We need to think our way out of this."
The dark magic swirls around us, a tangible presence now. Jeane's body language has shifted, becoming more fluid, almost serpentine. She is lost in the flow of her own power, and I can see the creature leaning forward slightly, drawn by the raw energy.
I take a deep breath, my fingers tightening on the spell components at my belt. Whatever happens next, we face it together. This is the true test of our party’s strength: not just our individual abilities, but how well we can work as one against an enemy we barely understand.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I grip my mace tighter, knuckles white, as Jeane begins her dangerous channeling. The air crackles with dark energy, raising every hair on my body. Part of me wants to shout a warning, to tell her this is too reckless. But another part, the battle-worn part that's seen magic both wondrous and terrible, knows we have no choice. Halie faces her test with the liminal wretch, and I can see the fear in her eyes even as she stands tall. My heart aches for her, but Jeane is right—this creature wants something from each of us, not just faith or strength. It hungers for our very essence. I keep my distance from the swirling dark magic, ready to move if it threatens to engulf someone. My gaze darts between the obsidian guardian and the portal where Halie's trial awaits. We're on a razor's edge here, one wrong move could unravel everything. "Jeane," I call out, my voice steady even as unease twists in my gut, "be careful with that power. We need you whole if we hope to get out of this alive."

I turn to Merrin, my tone firm but not unkind. "Keep your wits about you. Your cunning might be what saves us yet." Then to Seraphine, I add, "And be ready with those counter-spells. We may need them before the end."

As for me, I hold my ground, mace at the ready. If this creature thinks it can test us with strength alone, I'll show it how a dwarf faces such trials. But I won't be foolhardy about it. This is no ordinary foe, and we must use every weapon in our arsenal if we hope to survive. The air is thick with tension, dark magic, and the weight of our impending trials. But I feel a flicker of hope amidst the fear. We've faced impossible odds before and lived to tell the tale. This time will be no different—we simply have to find the strength within ourselves to meet this challenge head-on. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. Whatever this creature demands, whatever tests it lays before us... we'll face them together. As one party, one family forged in the crucible of battle. And if we fail, well... we'll go down fighting, each and every one. That is the way of dwarves, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
