Halie’s holy symbol pulsed with an otherworldly light, its glow spilling across the chamber floor and drawing the attention of the obsidian guardian. She could sense the creature’s interest in her, a predatory curiosity that made her skin crawl. The magic felt ancient, potent—both familiar in its divine resonance and utterly foreign in this profane place.

"Your faith is indeed intriguing, Halie," the creature's voice echoed off the stone walls. "But to prove your strength, you must..."

Jeane’s crimson eyes flashed with recognition—this creature was more than a simple guardian. She could sense it now: the ancient power coursing through its obsidian form, pulsing in sync with Halie's holy symbol. A shiver ran down her spine as she remembered dealing with entities like this before, and how rarely their curiosity came without cost.

She stepped closer to Seraphine, her voice low and urgent. "Halie, we need to be careful here. That thing... it’s not just a guardian. It’s something ancient and hungry."

I step forward, my holy symbol still glowing but now pulsing more slowly, its light dimming as I try to rein in the reaction. My gut twists with a sick dread—I know what this is. The magic isn't responding to me. It’s using me. And whatever that thing wants... it's not good.

I look at Jeane, seeing the fire in her eyes and the restless shift of her wings—both familiar signals of her protective instincts flaring up. Damn it, I can’t let her do something reckless again. Not after what happened last time.

"Jeane, wait—"

I watch as Halie steps forward, her holy symbol still glowing but now pulsing more slowly, its light dimming as she tries to rein in her reaction. I can see the fear in her eyes, the tension in her shoulders as she faces down the obsidian guardian and demands answers.

For a moment, I consider speaking up, offering some wry comment or clever quip to ease the tension. But something about this situation feels... wrong. The magic is too strong, too ancient for my usual tricks.
