Round 79 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air crackles with anticipation as the obsidian creature's form blurs once more, its core pulsing with an energy that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol towards it. The symbol's light begins to envelop the creature, casting a warm glow over the chamber floor. "Your faith is indeed intriguing, Halie," the creature's voice echoes off the stone walls. "But to prove your strength, you must first confront the darkness within yourself." The creature's form shifts again, its solidification now accompanied by a faint, eerie glow that seems to be drawing Jeane closer. As the creature speaks, the growling from beyond the gate recedes, replaced by an expectant silence. Halie's faith is indeed being tested, and she must decide how to respond. The symbol on the obsidian guardian's surface pulses in time with Halie's holy symbol, creating an energy that both attracts and repels. Seraphine watches intently, her eyes locked onto the symbol as she searches for understanding. Suddenly, a loud growl echoes from beyond the gate, causing the party to turn towards the sound. The creature's eyes flash towards the door, its gaze intense and warning. "It seems our test is not the only one on hand," the creature says, its voice dripping with a sinister undertone. "We have a... visitor."
Jeane’s crimson eyes flash with recognition—this creature is more than a simple guardian. She can sense it now: the ancient power coursing through its obsidian form, pulsing in sync with Halie's holy symbol. A shiver runs down her spine as she remembers dealing with entities like this before, and how rarely their curiosity came without cost. She steps closer to Seraphine, her voice low and urgent. "This thing... it’s not just testing us. It's probing our weaknesses." Her gaze drifts to Halie, concern evident in her eyes. "And that symbol—it's drawing power from her faith. We need to be careful."
Jeane's hand moves to the hilt of her sword—a magical blade forged in demonic fires—but she doesn't draw it yet. Not until she knows what they're truly facing. Instead, she closes her eyes and begins murmuring arcane words under her breath. The air around them shimmers as she draws on her demonic heritage—tapping into powers that are both dark and ancient. When she opens her eyes again, they glow with unnatural light as she stares at the obsidian guardian. "I see it now..." she breathes, voice barely audible yet carrying a weight that makes everyone present lean in slightly to hear. "...this creature... it's more than just a forgotten guard. It’s a gatekeeper."
Jeane turns her attention to the darkness beyond the gate where something growls again—louder this time, closer. Her wings shift restlessly behind her as she faces the group once more. "Whatever is beyond that threshold..." she gestures at the ominous darkness with a nod of her head "...it's ancient. Powerful. And whatever this guardian demands as sacrifice... I suspect it will be worth more than we bargained for."
Her crimson gaze meets each companion's eyes in turn—assessing, challenging, demanding their full attention and cooperation. "So here’s what I propose: let me try to communicate with this thing using my demonic bloodline’s... unique understanding of such entities." Jeane's wings shift again as she continues, "But we do it on our terms. With safeguards in place. And with an escape plan ready if things go sideways."
A low growl echoes from the darkness beyond the gate, causing everyone to tense. Jeane's eyes flash toward the sound before settling back on her companions. "Are we all in agreement? Or does someone here think we should rush blindly into whatever darkness lies beyond that gate?"
I step forward, my holy symbol still glowing but now pulsing more slowly, its light dimming as I try to rein in the reaction. My gut twists with a sick dread—I know what this is. The magic isn't responding to me. It’s using me. And whatever that thing wants... it's not good.
I look at Jeane, seeing the fire in her eyes and the restless shift of her wings—both familiar signals of her demonic heritage flaring up. I want to trust her instincts, but every lesson learned the hard way screams at me not to let that power control us. "Wait," I say sharply, my voice cutting through the tension. "We need to think about this."
I turn back to the obsidian guardian, my hand clenching around my holy symbol until its edges dig into my palm. "You speak of darkness and sacrifice?" My voice comes out harsher than I intend, but fear often wears a mask of anger. "Then tell us plainly—what is it you require? And why Halie's faith answers your call?"
I take a step closer, defiance mixing with desperation in my chest. "Because if this is some test for the weak... then know that we have survived worse. We will not offer ourselves cheaply to whatever ancient evil lurks beyond that gate."
I watch as Halie steps forward, her holy symbol still glowing but now pulsing more slowly, its light dimming as she tries to rein in her reaction. I can see the fear in her eyes, the tension in her shoulders as she faces down the obsidian guardian and demands answers.
For a moment, I consider speaking up, offering some wry comment or clever quip to ease the tension. But something about this creature—this gatekeeper—gives me pause. There's a power here that I don't understand, an ancient energy that seems to be drawing us in even as it pushes us away.
I glance at Jeane, seeing the fire in her eyes and the restless shift of her wings. Part of me wants to trust her demonic instincts, but another part—the part that's seen too many half-remembered tales of ancient evils—warns against it. We need to be careful here, I murmur, my voice barely audible even to myself.
But as the creature speaks again, its voice echoing off the stone walls with a sinister undertone, I feel a shiver run down my spine. Whatever is beyond that gate... it's not something we should rush into.
I take a step forward, my hand moving to the pouch at my belt where my lockpicks and other tools rest. If there's a way through this... a path that doesn't involve blindly stumbling into whatever darkness lies beyond... then I intend to find it, I say, my voice steady even as my heart races in my chest.
I look at Halie, seeing the fear and anger warring in her eyes. We stand together, I say softly, but we move forward carefully. With our eyes open. And with a plan to escape if things go sideways.
And then, before anyone can argue, I step forward once more, my hand on the hilt of my mace and my eyes fixed on the obsidian guardian. Now then... let's see what you're truly made of, shall we?
