Phase: converging

Varrika's voice cracked with barely contained grief as she called out to Halie. The dwarf woman's scarred hands gripped her mace so tightly that her knuckles turned white, the weapon a comforting weight in her steady grasp. The tower's darkness pressed in around them, thick and suffocating, but Varrika pushed it aside with sheer force of will. This was no time for fear—though god knows her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Halie!" she shouted again, her voice echoing off the crumbling walls. "If you can hear me, respond! We need to know you're safe!"
Merrin pressed herself harder against the stone wall, her wiry halfling frame barely visible in the gloom. The growling creature had taken another step forward, its eyes fixed on Varrika with an unnatural hunger. "Varrika," she hissed, her voice barely more than a whisper. "Are you sure that's wise? Drawing its attention like that?"*
Varrika turned to face Merrin, her weathered features set in a grim expression. "What choice do we have?" she growled, keeping her voice low. "We can't just leave Halie out there alone with whatever's lurking beyond that portal." She paused, swallowing hard against the terror that threatened to choke her. "Besides, I've got more pressing concerns than some ancient entity's displeasure right now."
Merrin nodded slowly, her dark eyes gleaming with a calculating light. "Fair enough," she murmured. "But we need to be smart about this. That thing's clearly not natural—probably some kind of guardian spirit bound to the tower by ancient magic." She gestured toward the pulsing green light emanating from the portal behind them. "And whatever Jeane did back there... it clearly had consequences."
Varrika's expression darkened even further at the mention of Jeane's name. "Don't you think I know that?" she snarled, her voice barely above a whisper now. "I saw what happened to her—saw the price Seraphine paid for that 'failsafe' spell." She took a deep breath, visibly trying to compose herself before continuing in a slightly calmer tone.* "But we can't afford to dwell on it now. Halie needs us, and this tower... something's changed since Jeane went through."
Merrin's eyes narrowed as she studied the pulsing green light emanating from the portal. "You're right," she admitted reluctantly. "The magic feels... different somehow. Darker." She paused, chewing her lower lip in thought before continuing.* "Look, I know we need to find Halie and get out of here, but we can't just rush in blindly. Whatever's beyond that portal... it clearly wasn't meant for mortals to disturb."
Varrika nodded grimly, her hand still gripping her mace with iron strength. "Agreed," she said softly. "But we can't afford to wait too long either." She glanced back at the creature still watching them from the shadows, its growls growing more insistent by the moment.* "Something else is coming, and I'd rather face whatever's beyond that portal on our terms than get ambushed from behind."
Merrin met Varrika's gaze, her expression unreadable in the gloom. "Then let's move," she said finally, pushing herself away from the wall. "But we do this smart—one careful step at a time." She drew her heavy mace with practiced ease, the weapon a comforting weight in her small hands.* "And if things go sideways... well, let's just hope Seraphine's 'failsafe' spell works as advertised."
Varrika nodded, a grim determination settling over her features. "Agreed," she said softly. "Stay close, Merrin. And whatever happens... we face it together." With that, she turned back to the portal, her scarred hands gripping her mace even tighter as she prepared to step into the unknown darkness beyond.*
Merrin followed close behind, her quick halfling eyes scanning every shadow for potential threats. "Just remember," she murmured as they approached the pulsing green light. "If things get too weird... we run like hell."
