The tower's darkness pressed in around them, thick and suffocating, but Seraphine pushed it aside with sheer force of will. This was no time for fear—though god knows her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"We can't afford to lose her," the elf scholar said, turning to face Jeane. Her voice was low, barely more than a whisper, but it carried the weight of absolute certainty. "Sorceress, we'll need some kind of failsafe—a link between us that will pull her back if things go... wrong." She paused, swallowing hard against the terror that threatened to choke her.
Jeane's crimson eyes met Seraphine's, and for a moment, something passed between them. A shared understanding of the madness of their situation, perhaps, or the weight of the choices they'd already made. The succubus woman stepped closer, her dark leathery wings rustling softly as she moved.
"Failsafe?" Jeane repeated, her tone carefully neutral. "You mean like a magical tether? A connection that'll yank her back if she gets in over her head?" She glanced toward the portal, where Halie's silhouette was barely visible through the shimmering green energy. "That might work... but it won't be easy. The magic in there is ancient and hostile—it could corrupt any binding we try to establish."
Seraphine nodded, her fingers already moving as she began weaving a complex pattern of arcane symbols in the air between them. "I know," she said, voice tight with concentration. "But we have to try something. I won't just stand here and watch our friend walk into certain doom—"
Her words cut off abruptly as a low growl echoed from beyond the portal's threshold. The green light pulsed faster, and Halie stumbled back a step, her hand reaching instinctively for the crossbow at her side.
"Halie!" Seraphine called out, her voice sharp with concern. "What do you see? What's happening in there?"
The cleric's voice barely made it through the portal's energy, distorted and strained: "It's... dark. Too dark to see anything. But I can feel something watching me. Something big." She paused, then added, "And I think I hear... breathing. Lots of breathing."
Jeane was already moving, her wings half-spread as she prepared to rush through the portal after Halie. "Wait!" Seraphine grabbed her arm, holding her back. "If we both go in there blind, we'll just be more targets. Let me try something first—"
But Jeane was already shaking her head, crimson eyes flashing with determination. "No," she said firmly. "I won't let our healer face whatever's in there alone." And with that, she stepped through the shimmering green energy, vanishing into the darkness beyond.
Seraphine stood frozen for a heartbeat, torn between terror and admiration. Then she whirled to Merrin and Varrika, who still stood gaping at the portal's entrance.
"Right," she said, her voice barely shaking. "New plan. We need to figure out what just happened in there, and fast." She began pacing, already thinking through arcane possibilities. "If Jeane's right about the magic being corrupted... then any direct binding spell might backfire. But maybe we can—"
Her words were cut off as a scream echoed from beyond the portal—a woman's voice, filled with pain and terror. It was unmistakably Halie.
"FUCK!" Seraphine hissed, her elegant composure shattering in an instant. She lunged for the portal, ready to follow Jeane through—
But as her fingers touched the shimmering green energy, it pulsed with a malevolent light and slammed shut with a sound like a tomb door closing. The stone wall beyond sealed itself seamlessly, leaving no trace of the entrance that had been there moments before.
Seraphine staggered back, her mind reeling. "No," she whispered, staring at the solid stone where the portal had been. "No, no, no..." She whirled to face Merrin and Varrika, her eyes wide with horror and desperation. "We have to find another way in. Now."
