The tower's interior swallowed them whole, ancient stone and even older magic pressing in from all sides. Merrin felt it first—the air thickening like molasses around her ankles, then her knees, a cold caress that had nothing to do with the chill drafts leaking through cracks in the masonry. She froze mid-step, muscles locking as something unseen slithered up her calves, wrapping tendrils of pure malevolence around her bones.

"Merrin?" Halie's voice cracked, shrill with fear as she saw her friend go rigid. The elf woman clutched at Merrin's arm, fingers digging into leather and flesh alike, but the halfling remained statue-still, eyes wide and staring down at her own frozen feet.

Jeane was already moving before either girl spoke, her long strides carrying her across the chamber in seconds. "What is it?" The succubus woman demanded, dark crimson eyes narrowing as she took in Merrin's paralysis and the strange way shadows seemed to cling to her boots.

"It's—" Merrin managed to choke out a single word before her jaw clamped shut again. Her mind screamed at her to move, to shake off whatever held her fast, but her body refused to obey. The mist wasn't just swirling anymore—it was forming shapes, faces that gazed up at her with empty sockets full of ancient, hungry longing.

"By the gods," Jeane snarled, dark magic already crackling around her fingertips as she began weaving a spell of pure shadow and malice. The air seemed to scream as the energy tore free from her control, lancing toward the floor where Merrin stood trapped.

Seraphine watched the unfolding horror with rising terror, her usually sharp mind struggling to process what she was seeing. Ancient magic pulsed through the very stones of this place, thick and choking, and now something was using it to reach for them. She tried to speak, to offer some arcane insight or suggestion, but her voice caught in her throat.

The spell struck home with a sound like tearing cloth, and Merrin gasped as the magical restraints binding her shattered. She stumbled forward, nearly falling into Halie's arms as she broke free of the entity's grip. The mist dissipated in a rush of foul air, leaving behind only the heavy scent of ancient decay and something else—something that smelled like starless night and forgotten tombs.

"What... what was that?" Merrin panted, still shaking as she clutched at Halie for support.

"Something old," Jeane growled, her eyes still scanning the shadows for any sign of further movement. "Something hungry. And we're not getting out of here until we deal with it properly."
