Round 52 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The air around Merrin seems to thicken, heavy with the malevolent energy emanating from the swirling mist at her feet. Her eyes widen in alarm as it begins to take shape, forming a twisted, nightmarish visage that gazes up at her with an unblinking stare. The entity's voice whispers in her mind, its words indistinct but full of ancient, hunger-filled longing. "Come," the mist seems to be saying, "join me in the darkness." Halie clings to Merrin's arm, her grip tightening as she whispers, "Merrin, no! Don't let it get you!" Jeane takes a step forward, her Heavy Mace at the ready, but Varrika raises a hand, cautioning her to wait.
You're absolutely right—I saw Merrin freeze when those tendrils touched her feet. That ancient voice... it sounded hungry in a way no normal entity's should. Jeane's eyes narrow as she watches the mist swirl around Merrin's ankles, forming those twisted faces. Whatever that is, it doesn't just want to harm her—it wants to corrupt or control her somehow. And we can't risk letting some eldritch horror add her to its collection while we're trying to escape this place. She steps forward, positioning herself between Merrin and the gateway's darkness, her wings half-spread in a protective stance. I'll take point—my magic might be on cooldown right now, but at least these wings can smash through wards or shield us if needed. Varrika and Seraphine should watch our flanks while Merrin and Halie stay close together behind me. If that mist starts talking to you again... Her voice hardens. ...you tell me immediately. We don't need you falling prey to some ancient mind-whisperer while we're trying to survive this tower. She glances at the ajar gate, noting how the runes seem to pulse with ominous light. Something's changing—the wards are weakening but not completely breaking down. Whatever Jeane did when she sacrificed herself... it opened a path but also destabilized the whole damn structure of this place. We need to get deeper in before more creatures come sniffing around, drawn by the scent of our survival or whatever dark power's filling that void now. Jeane's hand unconsciously moves to her belt where her Heavy Mace usually hangs—she's not used to being without it. Stay close and stay alert. We face whatever comes next together or not at all. And Merrin... She locks eyes with the warrior. ...no heroic last stands this time, no charging in blindly. Your job is to survive—not die gloriously for some ancient horror story. Understood? Without waiting for a response, Jeane turns and steps through the cracked gate into the darkness beyond, her wings outstretched slightly as she scans for immediate threats. Come on—we've got ground to cover before whatever's making that growling sound decides we're too slow and sends something worse after us.
Merrin's gaze darts between the swirling mist at her feet and the slightly ajar gate ahead, her mind racing with the weight of their dire situation. The whispers from the entity in the mist grow louder, more insistent, and she can feel an unnatural pull towards its darkness. Halie's grip on her arm tightens, grounding Merrin in the present moment even as panic threatens to overwhelm her. At Jeane's words, a flicker of defiance sparks in Merrin's chest. She's no coward, no damsel to be protected. Yet the rational part of her mind knows that charging ahead blindly will only lead to more death and suffering. Varrika's warning about not falling prey to ancient mind-whisperers echoes in her thoughts, and she shudders at the memory of how close she came to succumbing to the entity's seductive pull just moments ago. As Jeane steps through the cracked gate, her wings outstretched protectively, Merrin feels a surge of loyalty and gratitude towards her fellow adventurer. Jeane may be acting as their de facto leader now, but Merrin knows that each of them will have to play their part if they hope to survive this accursed tower. Taking a deep breath, Merrin nods at Jeane's instructions, her eyes hardening with determination. "I hear you," she says, her voice low and resolute. "No heroic last stands. Just survive." She glances at Halie, offering the cleric a reassuring smile even as her own heart pounds with fear. "Stay close to me, Halie. We'll watch each other's backs."
With that, Merrin steps through the gate into the darkness beyond, her crossbow at the ready and her senses on high alert. She knows that whatever horrors lie ahead, they'll face them together or not at all. And gods help her, but she intends to see this through—no matter the cost.
I feel a chill trace its way down my spine as we cross the threshold into the tower's interior. The air here is thick with ancient magic, so dense it feels almost solid against my skin. Every instinct screams at me to turn back, to flee this place of death and darkness, but Jeane's words echo in my mind: "No heroic last stands." She's right. Our survival now depends on prudence and cunning, not reckless bravery.
My eyes strain against the gloom, trying to make out any signs of traps or wards in the cracked stone walls around us. The runes that once adorned the entrance are now little more than faded scars, their power waning with each passing moment. Jeane's sacrifice bought us this chance—a slim opportunity to escape with our lives intact—but I can't shake the feeling that it was a temporary reprieve at best.
As Merrin and Halie fall into step behind me, I keep my senses alert for any sound of pursuit from beyond the gate. The entity that was once our guardian—now our captor—still lurks out there in the darkness, its hunger made all too clear by the tendrils that sought to ensnare Merrin. A shiver runs through me at the memory. Whatever it is, whatever power animates it, we need to be prepared for more than just physical threats now.
I turn my attention to Varrika, who has taken up a position of cover near the wall, her crossbow trained on the corridor ahead. Her face is set in a grim mask of determination, but I can see the weariness in her eyes. We're all exhausted, both physically and emotionally. The loss of Jeane weighs heavily on us all, yet we must push that grief aside for now if we hope to make it out alive.
My hand drifts down to the pouch at my belt where I keep my ritual components. They feel heavy, a reminder of the knowledge I've gained about this place's ancient magic. But even with all my study and preparation, I feel woefully unprepared for what we might face next. The tower's dark magic still surrounds us, those unknown creatures in the darkness still conceal threats, and now we face consequences for disturbing sacred entities. Jeane's sacrifice was necessary—but it may have simply delayed an even greater calamity.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever comes. This is what we trained for, isn't it? To face the unknown, to confront the darkest powers in the land. And yet, as I look back at Merrin and Halie, their faces etched with fear and determination, I wonder if any of us were truly ready for something like this.
We press on into the depths of the tower, our footsteps echoing ominously off the ancient stone walls. Every shadow seems to hold a new threat, every whisper of sound a potential ambush. But we have no choice now. We must go forward—towards whatever dangers lie ahead—and pray that whatever gods still listen are watching over us.
