The air inside the tower seemed to hold its breath as the ancient runes flared into blinding life, their blue fire casting stark shadows that danced across stone walls slick with age and something darker. Seraphine stood frozen mid-sentence, her eyes wide with terror as she watched the portal's surface ripple like water disturbed from below—something massive was pushing its way through the thinning barrier between worlds, and it wasn't stopping for pleasantries.

"By the gods!" Halie cried out, her voice echoing off the cold stone as the thing lunged forward into their reality. Its elongated body twisted like a nightmare given flesh, chitinous plates glistening with some unseen fluid as it emerged fully into the chamber. Embers burned where eyes should have been, fixed unblinkingly on them with a hunger that made Merrin's blood run cold despite iron self-control.

"Forget your gods!" Jeane snarled, dark magic already crackling around her fingertips as she began weaving a spell of pure shadow and malice. The air seemed to scream as the energy tore free from her control, lancing toward the creature with malevolent precision designed to shred unholy flesh. Merrin felt the familiar surge of adrenaline, but beneath it ran the cold thread of calculation—Seraphine was right, their best chance lay in working together.

"Varrika," he called out, his voice steady despite the pounding of his heart, "cover our retreat if we need it. I need you ready with that crossbow." The dwarf woman nodded sharply, her fingers tightening on the weapon as she positioned herself between them and the portal's entrance. Her eyes never left the creature beyond, calculating angles and distances with the cold efficiency of a seasoned warrior who'd faced worse in darker places.

Seraphine, meanwhile, had already begun weaving intricate patterns with her hands, arcane syllables spilling from her lips as she drew upon her vast magical knowledge. The air around her shimmered with barely contained power, ready to be unleashed at a moment's notice—though the sweat beading on her forehead betrayed the strain of maintaining such a delicate spell while simultaneously monitoring their surroundings for further threats.

Jeane's shadow-bolts continued to lick out at the creature, each strike met by a chittering screech that set Merrin's teeth on edge. But the thing refused to fall back—if anything, it seemed to be gaining ground, its movements becoming more fluid as it adapted to their attacks. A fresh wave of panic threatened to rise in Merrin's throat, but he ruthlessly suppressed it. Panic got people killed; cold calculation kept them alive.

"Change of plan," he growled, already moving into position beside Seraphine. "We need to end this quickly before backup arrives or the thing decides to charge." The dwarf woman acknowledged with a curt nod, her crossbow already tracking the creature's movements with deadly precision.

Merrin drew his heavy mace, the familiar weight a comfort in his hands as he prepared to close distance. "Seraphine, I need you to hit it with something big—something that'll stagger it long enough for me to get inside its guard." The elf woman's eyes met his, fear and determination warring in their depths before she gave a sharp nod. Her lips moved faster now as she poured more power into her spell, the air around them crackling with barely contained energy.

Jeane, seeing the shift in tactics, altered her approach as well—rather than peppering the creature with shadow-bolts, she began concentrating her efforts on a single, more powerful strike designed to coincide with Merrin's charge. The shadows swirled and coalesced around her hands, growing denser and darker with each passing second until they seemed almost solid, barely containing the raw magical power she was pouring into them.

Merrin felt his heart rate quicken, adrenaline flooding his system as he prepared to spring forward. This was it—the moment of truth. If their coordinated attack failed, if Seraphine's spell didn't provide the opening they needed, then they'd be forced to fall back and hope they could find another way out of this cursed tower. But there was no time for doubts now—no room for hesitation.

"On three," he hissed, eyes locked on the creature beyond the portal. "One... two..."
