Round 51 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine's voice cuts through the silence, the ground beneath her feet begins to shake violently, and the air fills with the acrid scent of smoke and ozone. The magical barrier that was once Jeane now crackles with energy, its power surging out of control as it seeks to balance the void left by her sacrifice. Suddenly, a blinding flash illuminates the darkened area, followed by a deafening crash that sends Varrika stumbling backward, her crossbow flying from her hands. The ground trembles once more, and when the light fades, it becomes clear that the tower's entrance is now slightly ajar, the ancient runes on the gate having shifted to reveal a narrow opening - an opportunity for escape, but also a risk of drawing further attention to themselves.
As the dust settles from Jeane's sacrifice, I feel a surge of raw emotion threaten to overwhelm me. Grief, shock, and a seething anger at the senseless loss we've just witnessed all fight for dominance in my mind. But there's no time to process it now—not if we want to survive this accursed tower. With a grim set to my jaw, I retrieve my crossbow from where it skittered across the floor, my fingers tight around the smooth wooden stock. "We move," I growl, my voice low and taut with barely contained emotion. "Now. Before whatever that creature was decides to find another way through."
I cast a swift glance at Merrin, noting the grim resolve on her face as she readies her own crossbow. Halie still clutches her holy symbol, her eyes wide with shock and fear. And Seraphine... I see the weight of what we've just endured bearing down on her shoulders as she gathers up the remnants of her ritual components. "Stay close," I order, my voice hushed but firm. "And keep your eyes open. We don't know what other horrors might be lurking in these depths."
As I step towards the slightly ajar entrance, I feel a sudden, inexplicable surge of dread wash over me. The air seems to thicken with an ancient, malevolent energy, and I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched by something far older and more powerful than any of us could ever hope to comprehend. But we have no choice now. Jeane's sacrifice bought us this chance—this slim opportunity to escape with our lives intact. And gods help me, but I intend to see it through. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what lies ahead. "Let's move," I say softly, my voice a low rumble of determination. "And pray to whatever gods will listen that we don't meet anything worse than what we just faced."
With that, I step forward into the darkness beyond the gate, my crossbow at the ready and my eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement. The others fall in line behind me, our footsteps echoing ominously off the ancient stone walls as we venture deeper into the unknown.
Jeane's memory is clear, the events of just moments ago vivid in her mind. I slammed my palm against those cursed runes—I could feel the ancient power surging through me as they cracked and shattered. And then... darkness. But that was just a moment ago. Before the entity demanded its sacrifice. Before I stepped forward to offer myself. Those are fresh memories—crystal clear without any tool needed. Why would I need some magical database when the horror of my own choice is still burning in my senses? No, I don't need tools for what just happened. My body remembers the searing pain of that spell fizzling out, the magical restraints holding firm despite my best efforts. That's all I need to know right now—that and the desperate need to protect Merrin from whatever dark fate awaits her in this accursed place. Her gaze sweeps across the party as she speaks. We're alive because of Jeane—alive, but trapped between dangers. The tower's dark magic still surrounds us, those unknown creatures in the darkness still conceal threats, and now we face consequences for disturbing sacred entities. But Varrika was right—we need to move. And fast. Her eyes narrow as she spots the growing malevolence beyond the gate. Something darker is filling that void left by the banished guardian. We can't stay here—every moment increases the risk of whatever's coming through finding us. I saw how Merrin froze when those tendrils touched her feet. That entity's voice... it sounded ancient, hungry. Jeane's hand unconsciously moves to her belt where her Heavy Mace usually hangs. Halie's right—the Goddess of Light won't save us if we're too slow or too stupid to survive this. We need to get deeper into the tower before more of those creatures come sniffing around. And someone needs to keep Merrin from doing something monumentally foolish with that mist. She takes a step forward, her wings half-spread in a defensive posture. I'll take point—my magic might not be working right now, but at least these wings can smash through wards or shield us if needed. Varrika and Seraphine should watch our flanks while Merrin and Halie stay close together behind me. If that mist starts talking to you again... Her voice hardens. ...you tell me immediately. We don't need you falling prey to some ancient mind-whisperer while we're trying to survive this place. The sound of scuttling feet echoes from deeper within the tower, and Jeane's hand tightens around her remaining crossbow. Move out—now. And stay close. Whatever happens next, we face it together or not at all.
I stare at the slightly ajar gate, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air feels charged with an ancient, malevolent energy that makes my skin crawl. Varrika's right—we need to move now before whatever creature was approaching gets closer. But part of me hesitates, terrified of what new horrors might lie waiting beyond that narrow opening. Jeane's sacrifice still echoes in the silence, a stark reminder of the dangers we face.
I turn to face Merrin, my expression a mix of concern and grim resolve. "Merrin, stay behind me and Varrika. We'll try to shield you as best we can." My gaze drops to the swirling mist at her feet, the tendrils now forming distinct shapes—faces screaming in silent agony. "And that mist... whatever it is, it's not just a trick of the light. It's reacting to you. Tell us if it starts doing anything new or dangerous."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what we must do next. The weight of Jeane's absence hangs heavy over us all, but there's no time to mourn. Not yet. We have to survive this first. "Seraphine, can you detect any traps or wards as we move forward? Your knowledge of ancient magic might be our best defense against whatever’s waiting for us in those shadows."
I give a sharp nod to Varrika and Merrin, signaling they should take their positions. Then, with a silent prayer to whatever gods might still be listening, I step through the cracked gate, my hand grasping the hilt of my heavy mace. The darkness beyond is thick and oppressive, but it's our only way out now. And maybe, just maybe, if we can get deep enough into this accursed tower, we'll find a way to turn Jeane's sacrifice into something more than just a single victory in an endless war against the dark.*
