Round 50 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika's finger tightens on the trigger, the air erupts into a cacophony of scuttling footsteps and chitinous clicks, the growl from beyond the portal escalating into a deafening roar. The ancient runes on the gate flare with an intense blue light, casting flickering shadows across the faces of the party members. Merrin's crossbow bolt flies toward the darkness, striking with a loud thud, but the impact is barely audible over the growing din. The creature's eyes glow like embers, fixed on the party with an unblinking hunger. Halie's voice is barely audible above the chaos, "We have to seal it now!" Just as she finishes speaking, Seraphine drops to her knees, spilling the contents of her pack across the stone floor, her hands shaking as she begins to draw complex patterns on a large sheet of vellum. The air around her is thick with the scent of parchment and ink. The ground trembles violently beneath Varrika's feet as another, larger creature lunges from beyond the portal, its twisted form blurring through the shadows. The party's options narrow; can they buy Seraphine the time she needs to prepare the ritual, or will they have to face whatever emerges next?
I drop to my knees, heart pounding, and begin to pray fiercely to the Goddess of Light for protection. The ancient symbols on the gate pulse with malevolent energy, each beat seeming to pull us closer to whatever horror lies beyond. "We can't let this darkness through!" I shout over the din of scuttling feet and chitinous clicks. "Varrika, Merrin—you have to buy Seraphine time! She's our only hope!" My gaze sweeps across the party, taking in Jeane's fierce defiance, Merrin's cold calculation, Varrika's rock-solid determination, and Seraphine's desperate concentration. But even as I offer what support I can, my gut twists with fear. This is wrong—terribly wrong. We should never have tried to force our way through the crossroads like this. The price of disturbing sacred boundaries is always too high for mortals to pay. A part of me screams to flee, to abandon this cursed tower and its ancient evils before we all fall prey to whatever lies beyond that gate. But even as panic rises in my chest, I know I can't desert them—not when they're facing such terrible odds because I urged them on. I fumble for my holy symbol, clutching it tightly as I begin to chant a prayer for protection. The silver feels ice-cold against my skin, offering little comfort against the oppressive darkness that presses in from all sides. My voice trembles but gains strength as I call upon the goddess's light to shield us from harm. It's not much, but it's all I have to offer right now—faith and desperate prayer in the face of overwhelming terror. Gods above... what have we gotten ourselves into?
Jeane snarls in frustration as her spell fizzles, the magical restraints holding firm despite her best efforts. Enough of this! She hisses through gritted teeth, her crimson eyes blazing with barely contained rage and desperation. You want a sacrifice? Then take ME! With a swift, decisive motion, Jeane slams her palm against the ancient rune covering the gate. The symbols flare with blinding light before cracking and shattering like glass. Let's see how you like THIS offering! She taunts the unseen entity, her voice dripping with venom even as terror grips her heart.
As the portal begins to close around her, Jeane casts one last defiant glare at the party. Live or die trying... that's all any of us can do in this damned world! And with that, she steps willingly into the darkness beyond the gate, her form swallowed by swirling shadows as the magical barriers slam shut behind her.
The sudden silence that follows is broken only by the echoing sound of stone grinding against stone. The ancient runes on the gate flicker once, twice, before fading completely. In their place remains only smooth, unblemished stone—no trace of the portal or Jeane's fate.
I stare in stunned silence at the now-closed gate, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air feels suddenly heavy, thick with the weight of what has just happened. Jeane... she's gone. Sacrificed herself to close the portal and save us all from that ancient horror. A sharp, hot pain lances through my chest at the thought. "No," I whisper, the word lost in the sudden silence. I turn to face the others, my expression a mixture of shock and dawning realization. She did it. She actually did it. By the gods, we're alive because of her choice. My gaze lands on Varrika, who stands motionless, her face an impassive mask but her eyes burning with a new, terrifying intensity. Merrin is already moving, her crossbow at the ready as she scans the darkness for any further threats. Halie clutches her holy symbol, her lips moving in silent prayer. We're all here... but we're not all whole. Jeane's absence is a gaping wound, raw and immediate.
I take a shaky breath, trying to gather my scattered thoughts. "We need to get out of here," I say, my voice stronger than I feel. "Now. Before whatever that creature was decides to find another way through."
My mind races, frantically trying to process the enormity of what we've just witnessed. Jeane's self-sacrifice wasn't just brave—it was necessary. She saw the path forward when none of us could. And now... now we have to honor that sacrifice by surviving this accursed place and finding some way to make her death mean something more than just a single victory in an endless battle against dark forces.
I begin gathering my scattered belongings, my hands trembling as I roll up the unfinished ritual diagram. There will be time to mourn later. Time to question why we let things get this far. But for now... for now, we have to live. For Jeane. For ourselves. Because if we fail here, her sacrifice was for nothing. And that is a burden I refuse to bear.*
