The water had risen to Varikka's knees by the time she settled against the wall, her good foot planted firmly on a stone that seemed more stable than its neighbors. The liquid swirled around her legs with a persistence that suggested it might not stop until the entire chamber was flooded. Her soaked armor dripped rhythmically onto the floor, each droplet joining the growing puddle at her feet.

Merrin approached from the side, her movements cautious on the slick stones. She carried the Time-Splitting Sword in both hands, its blade still dark despite the arcane energies that pulsed through it in visible waves. "We need to get out of here," she said, her voice tight with urgency. "The water's rising too fast."

Varikka shifted her weight, wincing as pain shot through her injured ankle. "I'm not going anywhere like this." She gestured down at her legs submerged in the cold liquid. "Unless you've got some halfling magic to heal this, I'm stuck here."

Merrin's headache pulsed in time with the sword's energy, a reminder of how little rest she'd had since entering the tower. She blinked hard against the sudden swim of her vision, focusing on Varikka's face rather than the swirling shadows beyond the new gap in the ceiling.

The stone above them groaned ominously, dust falling from the newly created cracks. Merrin moved closer to Varikka, positioning herself between the dwarf and the potential collapse. "We can't stay here," she said, her eyes never leaving the unstable ceiling. "I've got an idea, but you're not going to like it."

Varikka raised an eyebrow, or would have if it weren't hidden beneath her helmet. "Oh?" she asked, her tone suggesting she was already bracing for a suggestion involving the sword.

Merrin grinned, a flash of teeth in the gloom of the chamber. "I'm going to use the sword to open us another way out." She raised the weapon, its blade beginning to glow with an eerie blue light that cast long shadows across the walls. "It worked before. It'll work again."

Varikka stared at the glowing sword, then back at Merrin's face. She opened her mouth to protest, likely something about the structural integrity of the tower or the danger of unleashing such power in a confined space.

But before she could speak, another roar echoed through the tunnels—a sound of something large and angry moving towards them. The water around Varikka's legs seemed to churn in response, as if the very chamber itself was alive with the sudden increase in urgency.

Merrin's expression hardened. "We're out of time for debate," she said, her grip tightening on the sword's hilt. "Hold on tight."

Varikka grabbed a nearby stone projection, her knuckles whitening as she braced herself. She closed her eyes, preparing for either the impact of falling debris or the sensation of being pulled through solid stone by arcane forces beyond her comprehension.

Merrin raised the Time-Splitting Sword high above her head, its energies now a blinding blue-white light that filled the chamber with pulsing waves of power. She focused all her will into the weapon, channeling the ancient magic through herself and into the stone barrier between them and freedom.

The sword struck the ceiling with a sound like thunder, and the world exploded into a shower of dust and debris. The opening was clean—a perfect archway hacked out of solid stone by the sword's power. Merrin didn't wait to see if it held; she plunged forward into the darkness beyond, dragging Varikka with her.

They emerged into a new chamber, the water from their escape pooling around them on the stone floor. The sound of rushing liquid and something heavy moving through water echoed from deeper within this new space.

Merrin helped Varikka to her feet, both women covered in dust and dripping with water. "At least it's not rising here," Merrin said, her eyes scanning the chamber for exits or—as she hoped—something they could use to heal Varikka's ankle.

Varikka nodded, shifting her weight experimentally. The pain had lessened, but the ankle remained swollen and useless. "For now," she agreed, her gaze following Merrin's towards a large shape moving through the water at the far end of the chamber. "But I don't think we're alone down here anymore."

Merrin raised the Time-Splitting Sword again, its energies pulsing with a softer glow this time. She moved into a defensive stance beside Varikka, her eyes never leaving the shape in the water.

"Stay close," she said quietly. "And whatever happens, don't let go of me."

Varikka nodded, her hand tightening around Merrin's arm where it was still wrapped around her shoulder for support. Together, they faced the darkness and the sound of something large moving towards them through the water.
