Phase: escalating

The ground shuddered violently beneath their feet, a loud creaking sound filling the air as rocks and debris came crashing down around them. Varikka's face set in a grim mask as she grabbed Merrin's arm, helping her stumble forward along the narrow ledge barely wide enough for two. The water rushing past their boots was a constant threat, its current strong enough to sweep a grown woman off her feet with ease. "We have to move, now!" Varikka cried out above the din of falling stone, her voice tight with urgency. The roar of the pursuing Guardian grew louder still as it crashed through the collapsing tunnel behind them, ominous thunder echoing off the walls. Merrin's heart hammered in her chest as they made their way towards a small opening in the tunnel wall, every step a precarious dance along the crumbling edge. The water surged past mere inches below them, its power terrifyingly close and all too real after nearly drowning moments before. They had to find solid ground fast, or risk being swept away again—or worse, crushed by the collapsing structure above.
Varikka's injured ankle screamed with every step, but she gritted her teeth and pushed forward, using Merrin's support as much as her own strength. The dwarf's face was pale with pain and exertion, sweat beading on her forehead despite the chill of the rushing water. "We're almost there," she panted, more to reassure herself than Merrin. The opening loomed ahead—a dark gap in the tunnel wall that offered their only chance of escape from the collapsing passage behind them. As they reached it, Varikka half-fell through first, pulling Merrin after her with desperate strength. They tumbled into a narrow chamber beyond, landing in a heap on solid ground at last. The roar of the river and the crash of falling rock seemed to fade slightly as they caught their breath, clinging to each other in the dim light of the new space.
Merrin's head was still pounding from the noxious gas exposure, but she ignored it, focusing instead on the relief of being off that ledge. She helped Varikka sit up against the wall, then quickly scanned their surroundings. The chamber wasn't large—maybe ten feet across at most—and seemed to continue deeper into the rock beyond a narrow passage opposite the entrance they'd just used. But for now, solid ground was all that mattered. "Are you okay?" Merrin asked, crouching beside Varikka and examining her injured ankle. The dwarf winced as Merrin gently probed it with her fingers. "It's not broken," Varikka grunted, "but it's sprained badly. I can't put much weight on it." She looked up at Merrin, her expression grim but determined. "We need to find a way out of here quickly. The Guardian won't be far behind, and this whole place feels like it could come down any moment."
