The water roared past them in a deadly torrent, Merrin clinging to the narrow ledge with desperate strength as Varikka stumbled towards her, using a chunk of rubble as a makeshift crutch. The dwarf's face was etched with pain but her eyes blazed with determination.

"Merrin!" Varikka cried out, her voice barely carrying over the thunderous rush of the underground river. "Stay where you are! I'm coming!"

Merrin's heart hammered in her chest as she watched her friend hobble closer, each step clearly agonizing. The water surged past the ledge mere inches below Merrin's boots, the current strong enough to sweep a grown woman off her feet with ease.

"I see you!" Merrin shouted back, her voice cracking with relief and fear in equal measure. "Hurry!"

Varikka finally reached the edge of the ledge, her breathing ragged as she collapsed onto her knees beside Merrin. The dwarf's face was pale with pain, sweat beading on her forehead despite the chill of the rushing water.

"I've got you," Varrika panted, reaching out to grip Merrin's arm with bruising strength. "Now we need to find a way out before that... thing... gets here."

As if summoned by their words, a deafening roar echoed through the tunnel system, closer than ever before. The very stone around them seemed to shake with the force of it.

"Shit," Merrin hissed, her eyes wide with terror. "That sounds close!"

Varrika nodded grimly, her gaze fixed on the darkness beyond where the sound originated. "Too close. We need to move... but I can barely walk, let alone fight."

Merrin's mind raced as she tried to think of a solution. The water was rising fast now, lapping at their feet with increasing urgency. She could feel the current tugging at her legs, threatening to pull her off the ledge despite Varikka's iron grip.

"We have to find higher ground," Merrin said desperately. "Something above the water level!"

Varrika's expression was pained but determined as she nodded. "Agreed. But how? My ankle won't let me climb anything vertical."

The roar came again, even closer this time, and something massive shifted in the depths of the tunnel ahead. A flash of ominous green light flickered across the walls, casting eerie shadows that danced macabrely in the rushing water.

"We don't have time to debate," Merrin gasped, her eyes fixed on the approaching horror. "We need to act now!"

Varrika's grip tightened on Merrin's arm as she nodded grimly. "Then we swim for it. We find the next chamber or tunnel that's above this damn river and pull ourselves out."

Merrin felt a surge of panic at the thought of returning to the water, but Varikka was right - they had no other choice. The rising current was already making their precarious perch increasingly dangerous.

"Alright," she said, her voice barely steady. "On three. One... two..."

Before Merrin could reach three, a massive section of the ceiling above them collapsed with an earth-shattering roar. Stones and rubble came crashing down into the water mere feet away, sending up a towering wave that threatened to sweep them both off their ledge.

"NOW!" Varikka screamed, her voice barely audible over the cacophony as she shoved Merrin forward into the churning waters.

Merrin hit the surface with a cry, the cold shock of immersion stealing her breath as the current seized her once more. She fought to stay afloat, her eyes searching desperately for any sign of Varikka in the roiling water around her.

The dwarf surfaced nearby, her face contorted with pain but her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "Swim!" she bellowed, striking out for a dark opening in the tunnel wall ahead where the ceiling had collapsed.

Merrin followed, her powerful legs driving her through the water as she fought against the current. The roar of the Guardian grew ever louder behind them, and she knew they were running out of time.

They reached the opening together, hauling themselves up onto a narrow ledge above the rushing water just as another wave crashed down from the ceiling collapse. Merrin clung to the stone, gasping for breath as she watched the torrent below carry more rubble and debris past them at terrifying speed.

Varrika was beside her, panting heavily but alive. The dwarf's face was pale with pain and exhaustion, her injured ankle swollen to twice its normal size.

"We made it," Merrin wheezed, looking around their new perch. It was a small chamber, the ceiling high enough that the water wouldn't reach them here - for now at least. But the sound of rushing water filled the air, and she could feel the vibration of it through the stone beneath them.

Varrika nodded, her expression grim as she surveyed their surroundings. "For now. But we're trapped again, and I can barely walk. That thing is still coming, and we have no way to fight it."

Merrin felt a wave of despair wash over her, but she pushed it down with iron determination. They weren't out of this yet - far from it.

"We'll find a way," she said firmly, meeting Varikka's eyes. "We always do. Now let's see if there's another way out of here before that... thing... catches up."

Varrika managed a pained smile, gripping Merrin's shoulder tightly. "That's my girl. Now help me get this boot off - I need to check the damage to my ankle."
