Phase: escalating

The current seized Merrin with the force of a thousand hands, dragging her deeper into the abyss. Her lungs screamed for air as the frigid water filled every crevice of her being. Through the swirling darkness, a faint light pulsed beneath the surface - an orb that seemed to beat like a heart in the depths. Was it some ancient guardian of this watery tomb? Or merely a trick of the mind, playing upon her terror? Her fingers closed around a jagged rock from the riverbed, desperate for purchase as the current threatened to tear her apart.
Varikka's voice cut through the roar of rushing water, weak but determined. "Elric, find Merrin. I can hold out for a bit longer." The dwarf woman clung to a precarious ledge with one hand, her other arm wrapped around Merrin's waist in a vice-like grip that was both salvation and torment. The water lapped at their chins now, the current growing stronger by the second.
Elric scrambled along the crumbling edge of the cavern, his eyes frantic as he searched for any sign of his companions. "Hold on!" he shouted, though his words were lost in the din. He spotted Merrin's form beneath the surface, a dark shape barely visible through the churning water. Too far to reach, too dangerous to attempt.
The ground shifted again beneath Varikka's feet, and she cried out as her injured ankle screamed in protest. The weight of Merrin's body pulled her downwards, inch by agonizing inch. "Varikka!" Elric yelled, lunging forward instinctively before catching himself on the edge. He couldn't save them both if he fell.
Merrin's vision blurred as she fought against unconsciousness, her lungs burning with the need for air. The orb pulsed closer now, its light seeming to call to her even as terror screamed at her to flee. Was it a path to escape? Or merely the siren song of death, luring her into eternal rest?
The water rose another inch, cold and relentless against Varikka's chin. She gritted her teeth, muscles straining as she fought to maintain her grip on Merrin and the ledge. Her injured ankle throbbed with each movement, a white-hot pain that threatened to overwhelm her senses.
Elric's mind raced, weighing options that offered no good outcomes. He could try to dive in after Merrin, but he'd likely drown alongside her if he couldn't find his way back up through the darkness and current. Or he could focus on pulling Varikka up, but her injury made that a precarious proposition at best.
The orb pulsed again, its light seeming to caress Merrin's face as she hung helpless in the water. Was it offering salvation? Or merely mocking her helplessness? Her fingers tightened around the rock, muscles burning with exertion as she fought against the current.
Varikka felt her grip slipping, muscles screaming in protest as she strained against the weight and flow of water. "Elric!" she gasped, voice barely audible over the roar of rushing water. "I can't... hold on much longer!"
The current shifted suddenly, and Merrin felt herself being pulled towards the orb. Her eyes widened in terror as she realized it wasn't a rock or creature - it was some kind of magical artifact, pulsing with power that called to her very essence.
Elric made his decision in a split second. "Varikka! I'm coming!" He dove forward without hesitation, fingers closing around her outstretched arm just as her grip on the ledge failed completely.
The orb enveloped Merrin in a swirling vortex of light and power, pulling her into its depths even as she fought to break free. The last thing she remembered before darkness claimed her was the sensation of falling...
