Phase: escalating

The ground shifted beneath Varikka once more as she struggled to find purchase on the slick stone. Her injured ankle screamed in protest with each movement, a sharp pain shooting up her leg and into her gut. The water was rising fast now, licking at her boots with icy tendrils that promised no mercy. "Elric!" She called out, her voice echoing off the cavern walls before being swallowed by the roar of rushing water. "I'm in a pit! Find a way down!"
She could see him above, his face etched with worry as he scanned the area for any sign of her. The dwarf woman gritted her teeth against the pain, using her powerful arms to haul herself up onto a narrow ledge. Her heavy mace clattered to the ground below, lost in the darkness of the pit as she focused all energy on maintaining her grip.
The water was gaining fast now, its surface churning with unseen currents that threatened to pull her under once more. Varikka's breath came in ragged gasps as she fought against the rising tide, her muscles burning with exertion. She could feel the stone beneath her hands giving way bit by bit, each movement sending tiny pebbles cascading into the abyss below.
"Varrika!" Elric's voice cut through the din, and she looked up to see him frantically searching for a path down to her position. The sight gave her renewed determination even as the water lapped at her fingers. She couldn't let herself be swept away again—not with Merrin still missing and the entire party in peril.
With a grunt of effort, the dwarf warrior heaved herself up onto a slightly higher ledge, her good leg pushing against the wall for leverage. The movement sent a fresh wave of agony through her ankle, but she bit down on her lip, refusing to cry out. She wouldn't be a burden—she'd find a way out of this mess just like she always had.
The water was mere inches from her now, its frigid touch raising goosebumps along her exposed skin. Varikka redoubled her efforts, fingers scrabbling for any handhold as she pulled herself higher. She could see Elric above her, his face etched with concern and desperation. He was shouting something, but it was lost in the roar of the water.
"Stay back!" She called back, her voice barely audible over the din. "The ground's too unstable! Find another way down!"
She knew he wouldn't listen—Elric had always been the type to rush headlong into danger without a second thought. And right now, that was exactly what they needed. As long as she could keep herself above water and provide some kind of distraction, maybe he'd find a way to reach her—or at least Merrin.
The dwarf woman's mind raced as she assessed her options. With her ankle in this state, climbing was out of the question. She'd have to find a way to stabilize herself here on this ledge until Elric could come up with a plan. But how? The stone was slick with moisture and showed signs of further collapse with each passing moment.
An idea struck her—if she could wedge something against the wall behind her, it might buy her some time and stability. Her crossbow was still slung across her back, its stock thick and sturdy enough to serve as a makeshift brace. With a grunt of effort, Varikka maneuvered herself into position, pressing her back against the cavern wall and extending the weapon's stock outward at an angle.
The improvised support creaked under the pressure but held firm for now. She could feel the tension in her muscles beginning to ease ever so slightly as some of the weight was transferred from her trembling legs to the solid stone behind her. It wasn't perfect, but it would have to do—for now.
"Elric!" She called out once more, her voice barely carrying over the rushing water. "I've got myself braced for now! But we need to find Merrin and get out of here before this whole place comes down!"
She knew he could hear her, could see him searching frantically above. The young man's face was a mask of concentration as he scanned the area for any sign of their missing companion or a viable escape route. Varikka's heart clenched with worry for Merrin—where had she been swept to? Was she even still alive after being dragged under like that?
No, she couldn't think like that. The halfling rogue was too skilled, too resilient to go out like that. They'd find her—together. As long as they stayed focused and worked as a team, they could overcome this disaster. It's what they'd always done before.
The water lapped at the edge of her makeshift ledge now, its surface churning with unseen currents that threatened to pull her under once more. Varikka gritted her teeth against the cold, focusing all her energy on maintaining her precarious position. She could feel the stone beneath her hands giving way bit by bit, each movement sending tiny pebbles cascading into the abyss below.
But she wouldn't give up—not yet. Not ever. With a deep breath, the dwarf warrior steeled herself for whatever came next, her gaze fixed on Elric above as she waited for his next move.
