The water rose in a swift flood, consuming the chamber floor with alarming speed. Merrin found herself wading through ankle-deep liquid that seemed to have appeared from nowhere, her boots squelching with each step. The stone beneath her feet vibrated with a low rumble that set her teeth on edge—the kind of sound that spoke of ancient mechanisms awakened after centuries of slumber.

"Merrin!" Varikka's voice cut through the growing roar of rushing water. The dwarf woman stood on higher ground near the chamber wall, her face pale in the dim light. Her injured ankle made standing precarious enough without adding rising floodwaters to the mix. "How deep does it get?"

"I don't know!" Merrin called back, moving towards Varikka with quick strides that splashed water around her feet. She could feel the current tugging at her legs now, not strong but insistent—enough to make progress difficult and dangerous. The water was already halfway up her calves when she reached Varikka's side.

"Here," she said, reaching out a hand. "We need to get you higher." Varrika took her grip, face set with pain as Merrin helped her hop on one foot towards a raised stone platform that served as the chamber's only high ground. The water was already lapping at its base by the time they reached it.

"What in all the gods' names is happening?" Varikka gasped as she sat heavily on the stone, pulling her injured leg up to cradle it. Merrin shook water from her hands and scanned the room, looking for any sign of what had triggered this sudden flood. Her eyes landed on the central pool—the source of the problem, clearly. The liquid within was churning now, glowing faintly with an eerie green light that pulsed like a heartbeat.

"I think we found the water feature," Merrin said grimly. "And I don't think it's meant for bathing." She moved to the edge of their makeshift island, peering down into the swirling depths below. The liquid seemed to be draining out through hidden channels in the floor—channels that were now wide open and actively flooding the rest of the chamber.

"Can you see anything?" Varikka asked, leaning forward despite her injury.

Merrin shook her head. "Just water going down holes. But listen..." She held up a hand for silence, straining to hear over the rush of liquid. There it was again—a sound beneath the water's roar. Clicking. Like something large moving through the depths below them.

"Something's in there," she said softly. "And I don't think it's friendly."
