Round 805 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin calls out to Varikka, she stumbles forward, her mace clutched tightly in her hand. She winces with each step, her injured ankle throbbing in agony. The air is thick with dust, and the faint clicking sound grows louder, echoing off the ancient stone walls. Varikka's response is barely audible, a weak but resolute "I'm... alive." Her face is twisted in pain as she struggles to put weight on her ankle. Merrin's eyes scan the chamber, searching for any sign of an escape route or the source of the clicking sound. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet shudders violently, and a section of the wall slides open, revealing a narrow passageway. Water rushes in, flooding the chamber with icy cold liquid. The Guardian's pursuit is momentarily forgotten as The Narrator exclaims, "The path forward is blocked by rising water!" The sound of rushing water grows louder, and the air is filled with the stench of damp earth and decay. Varikka's mace slips from her grasp, lost in the deluge, while Merrin's crossbow bolts are rendered useless by the churning water.
"Curse this accursed place!" I mutter, my eyes straining in the dim light. The chamber is flooding rapidly now, water surging up to our knees. "Varikka, can you walk?" I reach out to steady her, my hand gripping her arm tightly. She nods, her face pale and set with pain. "I'll manage," she says through gritted teeth. "But we need to find a way out of here before we drown."
I nod grimly, my mind racing as I try to think of a plan. The water is rising fast now, and the air is thick with the stench of damp earth and decay. Suddenly, a faint scratching sound catches my ear - and then I see it, a glimmer of light in the darkness. "There!" I point, my voice echoing off the ancient stone walls. "I think there's a passage over there, hidden behind the rubble."
Varikka follows my gaze, her eyes widening as she sees the faint beam of light. "Can you reach it?" she asks, her voice hoarse with pain and exhaustion. I nod, wading forward through the rising water. The current is strong, threatening to sweep me off my feet, but I manage to keep my balance as I make my way towards the hidden passage. As I draw closer, I can see that it's little more than a narrow crack in the wall, barely wide enough for a halfling to squeeze through. But it's our only chance. I turn back to Varikka, reaching out a hand to help her navigate through the rising water. "Come on," I call out, my voice urgent. "We need to move quickly!"
The water is up to our waists now, and the air is thick with the stench of damp earth and decay. But I can't afford to hesitate - not with The Guardian still somewhere behind us, and the rising water threatening to sweep us away. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. Then, with a final glance back at Varikka, I turn and wade towards the hidden passage, my heart pounding in my chest as I pray that we'll find safety on the other side.
Curse this accursed place, indeed! My ankle throbs with agony and I can barely stand, let alone wade through the rising flood. But Merrin's right - we'll be drowned rats if we stay put. I grit my teeth against the pain and push forward, the water now up to my thighs. It's icy cold and strong, threatening to sweep me off my feet. "I'm coming!" I call out, my voice strained as I reach for Merrin's outstretched hand. She pulls me close, her grip firm and steadying. "Can you make it through the gap?" she asks, her eyes searching mine. I nod, though doubt gnaws at me. My ankle pulses with pain, but I know we have no choice. With a deep breath, I turn and wade towards the hidden passage, my heart pounding in my chest. As I draw closer, I can see that Merrin was right - it's little more than a narrow crack in the wall, barely wide enough for a halfling to squeeze through. But it's our only hope of escape from this watery tomb. I take a deep breath and reach for the edge of the passage, my fingers scrabbling for purchase on the slick stone. "Wait," I call out, as Merrin turns to help me navigate through the rising water. "I've got an idea." I reach into my pack and pull out a length of rope, tossing one end to Merrin. "Tie this around your waist," I instruct. "And I'll secure the other end to my arm." She nods, understanding my plan. If the current is too strong for me to fight on my own, at least we'll have a chance to pull each other to safety. With a final glance back at the rising water, I turn and wade towards the hidden passage, my heart pounding in my chest as I pray that we'll find safety on the other side.
