Phase: escalating

The water rose with alarming speed, consuming the chamber floor in a swift flood that seemed to have appeared from nowhere. Merrin found herself wading through ankle-deep liquid that seemed to have originated from hidden channels in the ancient stonework, her boots squelching with each step. The stone beneath her feet vibrated with a low rumble that set her teeth on edge—the kind of sound that spoke of ancient mechanisms awakened after centuries of slumber. "Merrin!" Varikka's voice cut through the growing roar of rushing water. The dwarf woman stood on higher ground near the chamber wall, her face pale in the dim light. Her injured ankle made standing precarious enough without adding rising floodwaters to the mix. "How deep does it get?" "I don't know!" Merrin called back, moving towards Varikka with quick strides that splashed water around her feet. She could feel the current tugging at her legs now, not strong but insistent—enough to make progress difficult and dangerous. The water was already halfway up her calves when she reached Varikka's side. "Here," she said, reaching out a hand. "We need to get you higher." Varrika took her grip, face set with determination despite the pain in her ankle. But as they began to move towards a narrow stone staircase leading upwards, the water level surged again, and Varikka's leg buckled beneath her. The dwarf woman cried out as she fell forward into Merrin's arms—a moment of desperate balance before both tumbled backwards into the rising flood.
The current seized them immediately, pulling them away from the relative safety of the staircase. Merrin struggled to keep her head above water, one arm locked around Varikka's waist while her other hand clawed at the stone floor. The rope between them went taut, yanking painfully against her side as she fought against being swept away. "Varikka!" she screamed, but her voice was lost in the roar of rushing water. The dwarf woman surfaced beside her, gasping for air, her face contorted with pain and fear. "My ankle—it won't hold!" she shouted over the din. Merrin knew they had seconds before the flood carried them into whatever lay beyond this chamber—probably more ancient tunnels or worse. She had to get them both to solid ground, and fast.
With a desperate surge of strength, Merrin began to kick towards the nearest wall, pulling Varikka with her. The current fought against every movement, trying to spin them around and sweep them away. But she kept her eyes fixed on the stone surface ahead, muscles burning as she propelled them forward through the churning water. Finally, her outstretched hand found purchase—a rough-hewn ledge just above the rising flood line. She grabbed onto it with both hands, hauling herself up until she could throw one leg over and straddle the stone shelf. Then she reached down for Varikka, gripping the dwarf woman's arm and pulling with all her might.
Varikka cried out as Merrin heaved her upwards, her injured ankle dragging through the water and sending fresh waves of agony through her body. But she managed to get one arm over the ledge and then the other, collapsing onto the stone beside Merrin in a panting heap. The two women lay there for a moment, gasping for breath and staring at the churning waters below. The flood had already reached the top of the chamber floor, and they could hear the distant sound of even more water rushing in from unseen sources—this hidden room was rapidly becoming a death trap.
Merrin knew they couldn't stay put for long. The rising water would eventually overflow this ledge, and then they'd be trapped with nowhere left to go. But moving meant facing whatever dangers lay beyond the flood, and Varikka's ankle made that prospect even more daunting. The dwarf woman was already pale from pain and exertion, her breathing ragged as she clutched at her injured leg.
"We need to keep moving," Merrin said finally, her voice tight with concern. "Before this whole place collapses or we drown up here." Varikka nodded, teeth gritted against the agony in her ankle. "I can... manage," she gasped. "Just... give me a moment." But as they prepared to continue their desperate escape, neither woman noticed the way the rushing water seemed to swirl and eddy around certain points on the chamber floor—points that corresponded exactly with the markings on Elric's map.
