Phase: escalating

The ancient stones groaned like a dying beast, dust raining from the ceiling in a choking cascade that filled the air with grit and the stench of decay. Merrin half-dragged Varikka deeper into the crumbling passage, the dwarf's full weight pressing against her shoulder with every labored step. The injured ankle dragged uselessly across the uneven floor, each scrape sending fresh pain through Varikka's face contorted in agony.
"Keep moving!" Merrin hissed through clenched teeth, muscles burning from exertion. She risked a glance over her shoulder, squinting through the swirling dust. The Guardian still pursued, its silhouette barely visible through the debris as it navigated the collapsing corridor with terrifying ease. Every moment felt like an eternity, each groan of protesting stone echoing their impending doom.
The tunnel narrowed ahead, forcing them to angle sideways to squeeze through. Dust rained down in a constant cascade, coating everything in grey grit that clogged Merrin's nostrils and filled her lungs with every desperate breath. Her head pounded relentlessly from the lingering effects of the noxious gas, vision blurring at the edges despite her best efforts.
"We have to get out of this section before the whole thing comes down!" she gasped, muscles screaming in protest. Varikka stumbled again, her good leg buckling under the strain. "I can't... I can't keep going like this," the dwarf panted, face twisted with pain and exhaustion.
Merrin's free hand shot out, grabbing Varikka's arm in a vice-like grip. "Bullshit, you can and you will!" she snarled, yanking the other woman forward with desperate strength. "Because if we don't move our asses right now, we're both going to be buried under a mountain of rock!"
The ground shook again, harder this time - a warning rumble that sent fresh terror through Merrin's already racing heart. A section of ceiling above them gave way with a grinding roar, sending a cascade of rubble crashing down mere feet away. Merrin threw herself forward, every muscle screaming as she dragged Varikka with her in a desperate lunge.
They stumbled through the narrow gap just as another section collapsed behind them, a thunderous roar filling the air as tons of stone sealed off their escape route. Merrin sprawled onto the ground, gasping for breath, as the dust settled around them in thick choking clouds. She looked up at Varikka, who lay beside her panting heavily, face streaked with sweat and dust.
"Well," Merrin said after a moment, trying to keep her voice steady despite the pounding in her head and the adrenaline still coursing through her veins. "At least we're not being chased by that thing anymore."
