The ancient stones groaned around them, dust raining from the ceiling in a choking cascade as Merrin half-dragged Varikka deeper into the crumbling passage. The dwarf's full weight pressed against her shoulder, the injured ankle dragging uselessly across the uneven floor. Merrin gritted her teeth, muscles burning with effort, but there was no stopping now. "Keep moving!" she hissed through clenched jaws, half-dragging Varrika along the narrowing corridor. The air grew thick with dust and the scent of ancient stone, every breath a reminder of their precarious situation.

Varikka's face contorted in pain with each stumbling step, her good leg struggling to compensate for the useless ankle. "Merrin, we can't keep this up!" she panted, her breath coming in short, painful gasps. The whole damn place is coming down around our ears, and that nightmare creature is still on our tail." Merrin's free hand found the wall, fingers tracing the rough stone as they moved deeper into the darkness. The sounds of battle faded to a distant rumble, replaced by their own labored breathing and the scrape of Varikka's boot against stone.

Their progress was agonizingly slow, every step forward requiring twice the effort in unstable footing and Varrika's compromised mobility. The tunnel began to narrow ahead, forcing them into single file as the walls pressed closer together. Merrin's stomach twisted with anxiety—this felt like a death trap waiting to happen, but it was better than staying put for the collapsing ceiling or that monstrous guardian to catch up.

"Where are we going?" Varrika gasped from behind her, voice strained with pain and exertion.

Merrin didn't have an answer beyond 'away from here', but that wasn't nearly good enough. The ground rumbled again, a louder warning this time, and a fresh cascade of dust rained down from above. She ducked instinctively, pulling Varrika closer to the wall for what little protection it offered.

"Move!" she snapped, urgency driving her forward despite the screaming protests of her own injured ankle. "Just keep moving until we find somewhere stable!"

The darkness pressed in from all sides as they stumbled deeper into the unknown depths, the sound of falling stone and shifting rubble growing ever louder behind them.
