Round 788 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As I drag Varikka deeper into the tunnel, a chunk of the ceiling gives way above us, showering us in a cascade of rubble. The Guardian leaps aside just in time, but the creature is not so lucky - the falling rocks catch it square in the back, sending it crashing to the ground in a tangle of limbs and claws. The Guardian quickly assesses the situation, its eyes locked on us as it readies itself for another attack. "We have to move now!" it shouts over the din of battle. "The tunnel is collapsing!"
I turn to Varikka, my face set with grim determination. "Hold on, Varikka," I pant, my arm tightening around her waist as I half-drag, half-carry her through the crumbling tunnel. The air is thick with dust and the roar of falling rocks, choking and blinding us both. Suddenly, a loud rumbling sound echoes through the tunnel, followed by the creaking of wooden beams. The ground shudders beneath our feet as the tunnel's wooden supports begin to give way.
"Shit, shit, shit!" I mutter under my breath as I half-drag, half-carry Varikka through the crumbling tunnel. The ground shakes and bucks beneath our feet, threatening to pitch us both headlong into the darkness at any moment.
I risk a glance over my shoulder, squinting through the clouds of dust and debris. The Guardian is still locked in battle with that nightmare creature, their clash of steel and fury almost lost in the cacophony of falling stone. But even as I watch, a chunk of the tunnel wall gives way, showering them both in a cascade of rubble. The Guardian leaps aside just in time, but the creature is not so lucky - the falling rocks catch it square in the back, sending it crashing to the ground in a tangle of limbs and claws.
For a moment, I think the beast might be done for, but then its glowing orbs flicker back to life, burning with an eerie greenish light. It struggles to its feet, shaking off the debris like water from a duck's back. I can see now that it's even more badly mangled than before - one of its arms is bent at an unnatural angle, and its torso is crisscrossed with deep gashes that ooze some kind of viscous, shimmering fluid. But it's still moving, still coming for us, and that's all that matters.
I turn back to Varikka, my face set with grim determination. "Hold on, Varikka," I pant, my arm tightening around her waist as I half-drag, half-carry her through the crumbling tunnel. "We're almost there. We just have to make it a little further, and then we'll be safe."
And as I say the words, I know they're a lie. There is no safety in this place, no escape from the horrors that lurk in the darkness. But I have to believe it, have to cling to the hope that there might be something - anything - waiting for us at the end of this nightmare.
So I grit my teeth and keep moving, hauling Varikka deeper into the tunnel as the ground shakes and shudders around us. The Guardian's battle rages on behind us, a distant roar of steel and fury that mixes with the rumble of falling rocks. And all the while, I can feel the beast's glowing orbs fixed on my back, watching, waiting, ready to strike the moment I let my guard down.
But I won't let it win. I can't let it win. Because if we don't find a way out of this gods-forsaken place, then Varikka and I are as good as dead, and I'll be damned if I let that happen on my watch.
So I keep moving, my lungs burning with exertion and my legs screaming in protest. The tunnel narrows ahead, forcing Varikka and I to move closer together. Varikka's injured ankle protests with every step, making it difficult for her to walk steadily. But we have no choice - we have to keep going, or else we'll be trapped here forever.
