The fall seemed to last an eternity—Merrin tumbled through space, her stomach lurching with each sickening impact against unseen walls and surfaces. She tried to protect her head instinctively, curling into a ball as best she could amidst the chaos of collapsing stone and dust.

And then, with a final jarring impact that knocked the wind from her lungs, Merrin found herself lying on cold, damp ground, her entire body aching from the ordeal. She lay there for a moment, trying to catch her breath and assess any new injuries, before forcing herself to sit up.

As the dust settled around her, Merrin looked around, trying to make sense of their new surroundings. They seemed to have fallen into some kind of massive cavern—far larger than the tunnels above. The ceiling was high overhead, lost in darkness, while the walls curved and twisted away into shadowy depths on all sides.

A faint blue glow emanated from somewhere nearby, casting eerie shadows across the cavern floor. Merrin squinted in that direction, trying to make out more details through the settling dust.

"Varrika?" she called out softly, her voice echoing slightly in the vast space. "Are you okay? Varrika?"

There was a moment of tense silence before a pained groan answered her from somewhere nearby. Merrin scrambled to her feet, ignoring the aches and pains that assaulted her, and stumbled towards the sound.

She found Varrika lying on her side amidst a pile of rubble, her face contorted with pain. The dwarf woman's eyes flickered open as Merrin approached, and she let out a low groan.

"Ow," Varrika muttered, her voice thick with pain. "That hurt."

Merrin crouched beside her, quickly scanning for injuries. Aside from the obvious agony in her friend's expression, there didn't seem to be any new visible wounds—at least nothing life-threatening.

"What happened?" Varrika asked, her words slightly slurred as if she was having trouble focusing. "Where are we?"

"I think we fell," Merrin said, stating the obvious as she helped Varrika sit up carefully. "Some kind of big cavern down here—I can see a weird blue glow over that way." She pointed towards the source of the light, her curiosity momentarily overriding her concern about their situation.

Varrika grunted as she shifted her weight, wincing at the pain in her ankle but also seeming to catch Merrin's enthusiasm. "Well," she said, her voice gaining some of its usual gruff determination, "I guess we'd better go take a look then, eh? Can't just sit here forever."

Merrin nodded, offering Varrika a hand up. As the dwarf woman struggled to her feet with a series of muttered curses about 'stubborn stone tunnels' and 'pointless injuries,' Merrin couldn't help but feel a small spark of hope. They were alive, they weren't seriously injured beyond what they'd started with, and now they had a new mystery to solve.

Besides, she thought as they began to make their slow way towards the source of the blue glow, at least it's not raining this time.
