The ground gave way beneath them with a sickening groan of ancient stone. Merrin and Varikka tumbled into darkness, the world collapsing around them in a choking cloud of dust and debris. "Varikka!" Merrin's voice tore through the chaos, desperate and thin. She scrambled to her feet amidst the rubble, coughing, her hands scrabbling against stone until they found an arm—Varikka's arm. "Varikka? Varikka, can you hear me?" Her voice was hoarse with fear and exertion. The air was thick, heavy with the stench of decay and the weight of tons of stone above them.

Suddenly, a new sound cut through the settling dust—a low rumble that seemed to come from everywhere at once. Merrin froze, her heart pounding in her chest. The crack of stone giving way echoed through the darkness, closer this time. She could hear it now—the sound of more rubble pouring down somewhere nearby. The tunnel entrance was completely blocked, a solid wall of stone and debris where the passage had once been.

"We need to keep moving," Merrin said, her voice barely more than a whisper. "We can't stay here." But even as she spoke the words, she knew how desperate their situation truly was. The weight above them felt immense, oppressive. The air supply might not last forever in this sealed space. And Varikka—Varikka's ankle was badly injured, perhaps broken. She couldn't move quickly or reliably. They were trapped, with no clear way out and the sound of more collapse growing closer with each passing second.

Merrin's hands found Varikka again in the darkness, gripping her arm tightly. "We need to find a way through this," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "Or up. Or anywhere that's not about to fall on our heads." She could feel Varikka's body tense beneath her grip, hear the woman's ragged breathing echoing in the confined space. The rumble came again, closer now—a reminder that they were running out of time.
