Phase: escalating

The noxious gas had been thick in the air long before they reached the chamber, but now it was almost unbearable. Varrika covered her mouth with the back of her hand, trying to filter out some of the toxic fumes as she helped Merrin navigate the treacherous footing. The floor was slick with algae and Goddess knew what else, and every step felt like walking on ice.
They had barely made it through the narrow passage when the sound hit them - a roar like a waterfall unleashed. Merrin grabbed Varrika's arm, pulling her back against the wall as a torrent of water burst into view, rushing past them with enough force to sweep both of them away if they'd been standing in its path. "Goddess above," Merrin breathed, watching the floodwaters rise rapidly.
Varrika didn't have time to marvel at the spectacle. Her ankle screamed in protest as she shifted her weight, the sprain still fresh and painful. She needed both hands free to keep her balance on the slippery surface, but the thought of Merrin being swept away made her ignore the pain. "We need to move," she said urgently, scanning the chamber for any sign of an exit.
Merrin nodded, her eyes wide with fear as she watched the water level rise. She knew they had mere minutes before this entire space was flooded. "There!" she suddenly pointed, spotting a narrow opening high on the wall, just above the rising waters. "Can you reach it?"
Varrika looked up at the ledge, then back down at her injured ankle. She knew she'd need both hands to pull herself up, but the thought of trying to climb with one good hand and a sprained foot made her stomach churn. "I'll manage," she said, more for Merrin's benefit than her own. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for the pain, and began to move towards the wall.
Merrin watched as Varrika approached the ledge, her heart in her throat. The dwarf was moving slower than usual, favoring her injured ankle with each step. As she reached the wall, she tested her grip on the rough stone surface, finding handholds that would support her weight. "Be careful," Merrin called out, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water.
Varrika nodded, not daring to look down as she began to climb. Her injured ankle protested with each movement, but adrenaline and sheer determination kept her going. She could feel Merrin's eyes on her, watching every move, and it gave her the push she needed to keep climbing.
With a final heave, Varrika pulled herself onto the ledge, collapsing onto solid ground for the first time in what felt like hours. She lay there for a moment, gasping for breath and trying to ignore the throbbing pain in her ankle. "Come on, Merrin," she called down, reaching over the edge to offer her friend a hand.
Merrin didn't need to be told twice. She scrambled up the wall with practiced ease, her smaller size giving her an advantage in the tight space. As soon as she was safely on the ledge beside Varrika, she collapsed against the dwarf's solid form, both of them breathing heavily. "That was too close," she panted, her heart still racing.
Varrika wrapped an arm around Merrin, offering what comfort she could despite her own pain. They lay there for a moment, catching their breath and letting the adrenaline fade. "Too close indeed," she agreed, wincing as she tried to move her injured ankle. "We need to find a way out of here before the water rises any further."
