Phase: escalating

Varrika grits her teeth against the pain shooting through her ankle with each step, her knuckles white as she fought to keep them both upright in the churning waters. The noxious gas burned their lungs with each ragged breath, but they had no choice but to press on. As they stumbled forward, the concrete floor beneath their feet suddenly gave way, and Merrin found herself sliding down a steep, slick chute.
Merrin managed to grab onto a rusty handhold, her heart pounding in her chest as she hung precariously over the rushing waters below. She could see Varrika still standing on the edge of the chute, her friend's face twisted in concern and pain. "Varikka!" she hissed, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water. "Grab my hand!"
Varrika didn't hesitate. She lunged forward, her good hand outstretched as she tried to reach Merrin's grasp. Their fingers brushed, but it wasn't enough. "Shit!" she cursed, her ankle screaming in protest as she tried to shift her weight.
Merrin knew they didn't have much time. The water was rising fast, and the current was growing stronger by the second. "Varikka, you have to jump!" she shouted, her arms straining as she held onto the handhold with all her might. "I'll pull you up!"
Varrika took a deep breath, steeling herself for what she knew had to be done. She backed up as far as she could, then launched herself off the edge of the chute. She flew through the air, her heart in her throat, and managed to grab onto Merrin's outstretched hand just as she hit the wall.
Merrin grunted with effort, her muscles burning as she pulled Varrika up onto the ledge beside her. They collapsed onto the concrete, gasping for breath as the water rushed past them below. "That was too close," Varrika panted, her ankle throbbing painfully. "We need to find a way out of here before we drown."
Merrin nodded in agreement, her mind already racing with possibilities. She knew they couldn't stay put for long - the rising waters would eventually overflow the ledge and swallow them whole. "I saw a tunnel up ahead," she said, pointing towards the darkness. "It looked like it might lead somewhere dry. But we'll have to be careful - I don't know what else is in this place."
Varrika grimaced as she tried to stand, putting weight on her injured ankle. "Fine," she growled. "But you're going first. If there's any more traps or monsters, I want you to deal with them before they get to me."
