Phase: escalating

The grinding sound echoed through the chamber, growing louder with each passing moment. Merrin pressed herself against the stone wall, her heart pounding in her chest as she watched the water level rise inexorably higher. She could see Varikka clinging to a ledge across the rapidly flooding room, the dwarf's face set in a grim mask of determination despite obvious exhaustion.
"Varrika!" Merrin called out, her voice barely carrying over the roar of the flood. "Are you alright?"
The dwarf woman nodded, her grip on the stone ledge tightening as another wave surged past. "I'm holding," she shouted back, her voice strained. "But we need to find a way out of here before this whole place collapses!"
Merrin scanned the room frantically, searching for any means of escape or higher ground. The water was already waist-deep in many areas, and she knew it wouldn't be long before it reached the ledge where Varikka was perched. She spotted a narrow staircase along one wall that seemed to lead upward—if they could reach it, they might find safety from the rising waters.
"Varrika!" she called again, pointing towards the stairs. "Over there! If we can make it up those steps, we might be able to get above the flood!"
The dwarf woman nodded, her eyes following Merrin's gesture. She began to inch along the ledge, moving carefully to avoid slipping into the churning waters below. Merrin watched anxiously, ready to offer assistance if needed.
As Varrika moved, a sudden shift in the stonework above them sent a cascade of rocks tumbling down into the water. Merrin ducked instinctively as several stones bounced off the wall near her head. She looked up to see a massive boulder beginning to roll down the stairs she had been planning to climb.
"Look out!" she screamed, pointing frantically at the approaching danger. "Move! Now!"
Varrika didn't need to be told twice. With a burst of speed, she scrambled along the ledge and leapt across a narrow gap to a higher section of stonework just as the boulder crashed into the water below where she had been standing moments before. The impact sent a towering wave surging through the chamber, forcing Merrin to cling desperately to her own perch as the icy water washed over her.
As the spray subsided, both women found themselves soaked and shivering but alive. They exchanged relieved glances, knowing they had narrowly avoided a horrible fate. But their reprieve was temporary—the grinding sound continued, and the water showed no sign of slowing its relentless rise. They needed to find a way out, and fast.
Merrin's eyes scanned the chamber again, searching for any alternative escape route. Her gaze landed on a narrow passage in the ceiling above them, just barely visible in the dim light. It was risky—climbing up there meant leaving the relative safety of their ledges—but it might be their only option.
"Varrika," she called out, pointing upward. "I think I see another way out. But we'll have to climb."
The dwarf woman followed Merrin's gesture, her eyes narrowing as she assessed the situation. She nodded slowly, a determined set to her jaw. "Then let's move before this whole place comes down around our ears."
