The chamber groaned around them, stone complaining under immense pressure. Water lapped hungrily at Merrin's boots, cold fingers curling around her ankles. She saw it—the narrow ledge above the rising tide, their only hope of escape from the flood and the circling horror beyond.

But Varikka stumbled back into the water as the creature lunged, its eyes blazing with malevolent intent. The dwarf woman cried out, clutching her injured hand as she fought to keep her footing in the churning current. Merrin's heart clenched—she couldn't leave Varikka behind, not when every instinct screamed at her to run.

The water was already waist-deep in some areas, swirling dangerously close to the ledge Merrin had spotted. They needed to move, now, before the flood consumed them both. But how could she help Varikka climb with one leg screaming in protest from her own injury?

Merrin's mind raced, weighing options that felt increasingly dire. The creature circled closer, its attention divided between them and the rising water. Could they use that distraction? Could they somehow leverage the very flood threatening to drown them into a means of escape?

The answer came not in words but in action—a massive boulder hurtling down the chamber towards them, its trajectory aimed straight for the center of the room where Varikka fought against the current. Merrin had seconds to decide: try to reach the ledge alone or risk everything to save her friend.

She chose without hesitation. With a desperate cry, Merrin launched herself into the water, ignoring the pain that shot up her leg as she surged towards Varikka. The current caught them both, pulling them downstream towards the oncoming boulder and whatever lay beyond the chamber's edge.

The roar of rushing water filled her ears as they were swept away together, clinging to each other for dear life. The last thing Merrin saw before the darkness swallowed them was the Glowing-eyed creature, its eyes wide with surprise as their makeshift raft of bodies disappeared into the torrent below.
